Out of Warranty Issues

OK, I did a variation of this study before.

Tell me the first out of warranty, non-wear related, issue that you had.

But, don't repeat what someone else has already reported.

I'd like the list to show the variety of out of warranty issues our cars might face.

I'll try and track them in the OP so you won't have to scroll down...

So, here's they are:

ToroPerro: Passenger side motor mount started to leak at 52,000

MLPearson79: CVT failure at 103,000

lotsie: Passenger side window would not roll down at 98,000 cured by a good whack.

Well, if I can't repeat yours (motor mount around 75k), then CVT failure at 103k.

Mr. Moderator: That was a nice long run without an issue but I suppose the CVT was a BIG issue, eh?

03 Justa, 106k+ miles now. At about 98k miles, passenger side window would not roll down. Fix; give the door a good whack with my fist were the motor is, no problems since

If he dented the door, it would have been MINI.

At least it would have been a MINI dent

I dont get it....maybe I am just slow on the uptake or for me been just a long day. But, when you get between 50 and even over 100K miles on ANY car these days, what parts of the car do you consider NOT to be "NON wear related" ToroPerro ? Conceivably, issues listed are "wearable parts" and both failed within todays average standards for many brands of cars.

Maybe the sound system, and I'm sure there are others, but it's been a very long day.

Perhaps you could rephrase the question to be something like "Unusual or unexpected repairs (considering age/Mileage) that you had performed on your MINI."

I guess non wear related items might be something like.....er.....a mirror cap falling off.....I guess not...freezing and thawing+vibration.....how about a Power-steering pump failure....Oops I forgot...we all go around corners!!
Since wear is the result of use, or even lack of use, overuse, or misuse.....I guess any failure would be....unless it was somehow a defective part....but if it did not fail till well after the warranty....hard to argue that the failure was due to anything other than a design that needed to be "better" or more robust.
Frankly, Transmissions, motor-mounts, and superchargers are all wear items.....ever change the fluid in an auto tranny....the clutches contiguously wear.....A CVT....well....100k miles is bad luck....but certainly not too much worse than many common transmissions (you did better at 100k+ than many mini-van owners!) that get swapped out at similar mileage.....It is an very expensive thing to fix....I truly feel for CVT owners....but early adopters of almost any new technology often take larger gambles on their purchases......
Are you just looking for any repairs? To a certain extent, non-wear items could be construed as things that broke while a car was sitting in a heated, cooled garage, on a charger, getting rolled forward, than backward 10 feet everyday like a museum....

My MINI is one huge "life time part". Just like the fuel filter and SC oil !

A good point well taken...

I was trying to avoid common wear items like tires, brakes, windshield wipers, etc. so as to focus on outright failures such as a window motor, cruise control system and the like.

Items like these that sometimes work perfectly (and are often salvageable) long after a car has gone to the junkyard.

Toro Perro thread can be very valuable if we can identify the costs that comes after the warranty period. It would be helpful to forcast if we should purchase extented warranty policies, or just roll the dice.

Not trained by MINI, so I did it from the inside, so no dent

03' R53 - 88K miles.

BPV horn gasket. Had a leak. Boost guage was registering total vaccum up to -12 at 3K RMP's and engine would not hold at idle.

MINI Part - Intake duct1#17511524439- $84.32

Part no. 15 below.

The BPV horn assembly moves quite a bit when reving the engine so it works the gasket pretty good. Wear marks where it hooks up shows signs of rubbing ( Replacing the whole horn and gasket and since it's in total service mode, also the U/L radiator hoses and clamps, and crank sensor and gasket )

2003 MCS @ 65k

My dashboard lights stayed on after turning thecar off. I reset the computer and it went off but wouldn't turn back on. People on this forum tells me its the module behind the speedo. I swapped it out with a known working speedo.. nope didn't fix it. Not the fuses or relays either.

So I took it into the dealer.. bad idea? After an hour of diagnostics, the technician cannot find anything and asks if he should continue at the $92/hr rate. So after another hour, he finds that the general module (controls all the electronics) is f**cked.

Apparently, the general module cost $550 and needs to be programmed into the car. Diagnostics $184. Installation ~$150 or so. + Tax

I was sitting in the mini lounge thinking, should I pay $900 just to fix my dash lights? I plan to keep this car till it dies, so im out $800 (after service rep gave me some discounts). $800 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
