FRS Radios
FRS Radios
I saw that the FRS radios are on the what to bring list. I searched and can't find anything, but does anyone have a recommendation on FRS radios? I know absolutely nothing about them. Thanks!
Our club (Atlanta Minis) uses Channel 7 sub 21 on all our events. Any one of the brands is fine, as long as its programmable and offers a head set.
On several outing on the Dragon last year - it was just the ticket (no pun intended). However, the distance between the lead and tail car is limited on canyon / mountain walls.

If you go to the Best Buy website, you'll find several sets of radios that you can choose from. Netma1000 is right and our club also uses channel 7, sub 21 on events - I think that's pretty much a standard.
Lots of folks are likely to have extra's as well.

Wal-Mart, Target, Bass Pro Shop, and.... You get the idea I hope. Just about any department store that has an electronics/sporting goods section should have FRS radios.
I have several and will bring a couple of extras to the Dragon.

Looking at some on bestbuys site and there was mention of a FCC lincense needed... Do they all need this or is it a certain type or feature?

On 22 channel radios you need the license to broadcast on channels 15-22(GMRS) anytime, and 1-7(FRS/GMRS shared) if broadcasting higher than 1/2 watt.
8-14(FRS) do not require a license, nor do 1-7 if 1/2 watt or lower.
But.....
You are in the Smoky Mountains, far from the FCC.
It depends upon the power of the radio itself. Family Radio Service (FRS) radios typically have less than 500mw of power. General Radio Mobile Service (GMRS) radios share many of the frequencies of FRS but they can run up to 5 Watts and those (GMRS) do require a license.
Because most of the newer radios are sold as "FRS/GMRS" radios, there's the required FCC statement about the license for GMRS.
This is all good to know since I'm withing spitting distance of the FCC building!
