Blown Engine = Need for a New One

I managed to throw a rod & put a hole in my block during a track day. Don't know the cause yet, but the shop believes 70,000+ miles of hard driving with quite a few track events the engines got to give some time.

Definitely going to need a new short block, but I was wondering what some of you would do if you were in my position?

I track the car & drive it as it was meant to be driven, so performance options would have to be fairly reliable. Sucks this happened, but I now have the opportunity to make her better. I would like to keep the price range under 9k.

Because you are in Cal, check with Jan at RMW. He may have some ideas.

If you are trying to keep the price under 9k....you might need to buy a used motor/block, even a wrecked donor car, then sell off the spare parts. The dealer cost for a new block is crazy $$$.
I'd get a used motor, have it machined, and spend the extra money to maybe add some goodys... Maybe a cam or even oversized pistons to get a bit more volume. A full stroker would likely be more than you have to spend...but like I said, if you overbore the cylindars, and do custom pistons from RMW, it would pretty sweete!! Just depends on how much $$ you spend, or can re-coup from selling of the accsorys/head from the used motor and if you do some work youself.
Good luck!!
I think for. 9k you can do a pretty good budget build if you are smart!!

get a junker motor on e-bay from a salvage yard . or go to car parts . com . and check for a local motor from a salvage yard . they're good about returns if they state it's good unit . so get a salvage motor and have it worked . some builders prefer used blocks as the theory is it's been tempered or whatever .

Just remember that there are significant differences between the supercharged and non-supercharged short-block. Crank, bearings, rods, pistons, valves and other things. Don't replace with the cooper engine.

Here's a link that specializes in Mini salvage parts only. The phone number is on the in progress site. Good luck.

Thanks for all the input everyone. It is unfortunate that this happened, but it is an opportunity to make the car better. The car will be getting a new short block along with a Thumper head & Nitrostick cam

It is definitely pricey, but after this the car will be pretty much brand new. I'm not set on a "new" short block so to say, but it will be new to the car if you get what I'm saying . Sorry for the confusion.

5-9k for a shortblock? hahaha have any of you torn a MINI motor apart? These motors are about as basic as you can get for an overhead cam. MINI ought to be ashamed to charge that much, as there isnt anything worth that in the motor to justify that price...it's an iron block for crying out loud with one overhead cam!

MINI OEM pricing for some parts is crazy....I think it is to ensure they can comply with euro rules about stocking parts for a set period after the end of production....by pricing some parts very high...they must only have to stock a few....since they know people will get them from other sources!!
5000 to 9000 for a short Iron block is crazy...a good whole motor is often less! Much Less!!
