Thanks for the memories

I just traded my 2009 Mini S in on a new car. I got a 2010 BMW 135i to replace it. The Mini served me well but my wife has a herniated disc in her neck(prior accident) and the small car with S handling hurt her to much. Im also used to a car with more HP. The 135i has a softer ride and has HP+. The Mini will be missed though and thanks to all that helped me with my questions. You guys are a great bunch of people and I'll pop in from time to time. Thanks and Cheers!

NYMSC, I hope you enjoy the 135. I had a 2008, and the engine is awe inspiring! Look forward to hearing what you think of it.

Enjoy the 135. I'm doing the opposite - next week I'm trading my 135 convertible for a MCS.

Interesting - the 2009 MCS's I've driven (without sport suspension) have a smoother ride than my 135 (with sport suspension). This is the primary reason I'm ditching my 135 - the sport suspension/run flats/convertible setup is not a winning combination IMO.

Shes OK, just one on those achey, lingering things. Thanks for thought.

I took her on a test drive in a similar car(M-Sport) and we took a 45 minute drive looking for pot holes to hit. We found quite a few doozeys that the car took effortlesly! The Mini wasnt even close to being as smooth in that respect.
As long as shes happy.

NYMCS great choice. I almost did the same but came back to the MINI. Would you give us your initial impressions of the 135?

Thx.

So long, hope you enjoy your 135. Can certainly understand your wife's back problems and your need to help make her comfortable.

Living on LI, a 4-5 minute drive would have been enough...

Best of luck with your new ride!

Make sure you watch you're speedo because in a BMW, you don't feel your true speed...

Did you buy it or lease it? If you leased it, drive it like you stole it from day 1....everyone else does. If you bought it for the long haul, follow break-in procedures like I did......keep it under 4500 RPM, 100 MPH, and don't use cruise control for 1200 miles.

Funny you say that. I just said the same to the wife last night. The Mini spun up pretty high(4 cyl) doing lets say 80mph and the firm ride let you know and my C6 Vette is loud with headers,NPP mufflers and Super Charger and Z51 package is very loud and firm riding. The 135 has smooth power and the ride is compliant. Gotta be careful, the speed creeps up on ya.

I bought it. I plan on keeping it a long time. At the end of the warranty I might extend it. We'll see.

Thanks for the advice.

Enjoy the 135! I'm trading mine in tomorrow - my MCS has arrived. Will be glad to be done with the 135.

You've probably already checked it out - the 1Addicts forum is outstanding and will be a valuable resource for you. Hopefully your car will not have the common issues the early 135's have/had. Obviously the big thing is the HPFP problem - I was lucky not to experience that one but had all the rest and more.

Sorry to hear that.

I've been a member there for a couple of months now and learned alot as I did here for my Mini purchase. I hope they finally figured out the fuel pump issues for 2010. What year was your 135 and what other issues did you have?

Mine is 2008 135i convertible. All in all I just had a couple of things fixed under warranty:

-third brake light lens cracked/replaced/now cracked again
-defective auto-dimming on driver's side view mirror
-airbag indentation on dash (never bothered having them fix it)

Most of my beefs are just standard issues with the convertible I guess - the rough ride due to stiff suspension/run flats is simply bad. Add to that way too much flex in the body, causing all the vibrations, squeaks, rattles, etc that reverberate thru the cockpit when going over even the smallest of bumps. The rear view mirror constantly vibrating, the windshield shaking, the dash rattling. More squeaks and rattles appearing every week and even worse in warmer weather when all the plastic pieces expand a bit. Surprisingly other forum members with 1-series convertibles say their cars are squeak and rattle free and "solid as a rock" which mystifies me.

The other problem with the 1-series is the softness of the clearcoat - my 135i is Jet Black... what a nightmare to maintain. I noticed yours is Alpine White - smart move. Just be sure to wash all bird crap off immediately as it will etch the paint if left on over 2 hours. Avoid automatic car washes as they will ruin the finish.

Another 1-series problem area is the run flat tires. Very expensive to replace and provide an absolute nightmare ride. I sure hope you got the tire protection plan if you plan on keeping the run flats. Hit a decent sized pothole and there goes $400. I got hit with a $900 bill in December to have 2 run flats replaced. If I had been interested in keeping my 1-series I would have replaced the run flats with regular tires.

In the end I couldn't see paying a high monthly payment for a car that feels like it should have cost $20K less. The engine, transmission, and sport seats are great - all the rest leaves a lot to be desired. My 135i convertible has turned me off to ever owning a convertible again and I will tend to steer clear of BMW's in the future.

With that said I'm really going out on a limb purchasing a MCS, but I'm just hoping I get a "good" one. I'm not expecting it to be problem free. Just hoping with 2010 being the 3rd production year for the R56, I'll get lucky. Between payment and gas I will be saving $350 a month over what I'm paying now for the 135i convertible.

Best of luck with the 135i coupe - I wish I had gone with the coupe to begin with... I probably would have held onto it a bit longer.

I see that new 135 of yours is an automatic with what looks like the same Steptronic paddle/stick interface. Is it as fast and crisp shifting as the auto in my MCS?

Nice color. Same as my Alpine White Gibson Les Paul

It shifts fast enough for me, as fast as the Mini. 2010 is the last year for the Steptronic in the 135. 2011 cars will have a DCT for only $200 more than the step.

Thanks smpeck. To bad you had a less than desireable time with the BMW. As you said there arent alot of the same troubles you've had so dont hate em all due to one bad apple.
Thanks for the tips. Good luck with the Mini.

If that's the case prob not long now until MINI offers a DCT in the S or JCW as an option, maybe the Aisin 7-speed. good luck with your new car!
