New/modified motor mounts

I've seen a large number of posts dealing with the replacement of the Mini motor mounts. Lots of pros and cons regarding increased vibration and some that indicate they didn't notice much difference after replacing the mounts.

So I'm coming away from all this reading without being able to form a real opinion about the effectiveness of modified motor mounts, although I have to believe that there must be some benefit due to the large number of people who are using them.

In my '04 MC if I drive with my hand resting on the manual shift lever and step on the gas rapidly or back off the gas rapidly, my shift lever moves a considerable distance. Although I haven't used anything to measure the distance, it feels to be at least 1/2 an inch. My concern is that this motion is being transferred directly from the engine to my exhaust system and sooner or later something is going to become fatigued and break.

From those of you mini owners out there who have done the engine mount replacement/modification, what are your recommendations? And it would appear that there are several mounts that need to be looked at, which ones should be considered for stopping this torque motion?

Well a cheap option for you is to start with powerflex engine and trans bushings. That will help the engine not rock so much, and they are cheap.

Don't forget the upper engine bushing and look for the small dogbone replacements.

No problems/issues with mine. Been in for almost 3 yrs.

I put all 4 power flex bushings in and found them to stiff. so i drilled a few holes in them and now they are just perfect.the motor mounts were fairly easy to change so it was easy to drill a little then try it and drill a little more. good luck.

Thank you for your respons pmfranke.

When you say "too stiff", are you referring to the vibration that is transmitted in to the inside passenger compartment of the car as noise or just in the "feel" of the steering wheel and/or gearshift? I guess I'm asking you to explain how you perceived the stiffness. I'm trying to grasp if it's something that I could live with or would also find objectionable.

Only thing that changed with mine, besides better perfromance, was a bit of vibration at idle especially with the AC on.

I've had mine for 2 yrs and they are great i removed the top mount that is bolted on behind the brake resivior and replaced it with a new rubber one, that stopped most of the vibration at idle with the A/C on.

Alot of that torque of the engine is delivered through the lower motor mount. The upper torque dampener (on 02-04 R50) can also help you reduce that 'Torque steer' Link to a Lower Motor Mount that will reduce that engine rock while not adding alot of NVH.

Sorry to bring a thread back from the dead, but I am looking at upgrading my lower motor mount possibly this summer when I do my brakes. I am looking at the BSH lower mount and was wondering what I would notice, if anything at all? I already have the VIP Customs Engine Stabilizer up top, but if this lower motor mount seriously helps the performance of my R50, I may be able to be talked into this piece. Any input is welcome!
