Goodyear F1 GS-D3's are d/c in our sizes

Tire Rack still has a few left but if they are d/c, it's time to move on for me. I am not gonna risk another tire ending nail at 300 miles & no replacement available. Problem is there is no other tire I am even remotely interested in. I loved that tire. Great grip, amazing wet traction, sexy tread pattern.

What size do you use? I bought a set of discontinued Goodyear F1 GS D3's in 205-50-16 last year at a fire sale price. First time I drove on them I got a nail in one.
Lucky for me it was only an upholstery tack not a real nail.
That being said, I bought two more like new ones in the marketplace here. Now that I have two spares I'll never need them. My advice to anyone buying discontinued wheels or tires, buy five of them.

Unfortunately I do size 215/45/17. My nail situation happened when I bought 215/40/17 for a steal because the 40's were being d/c. Well the joke was on me when I got the nail right at the sidewall not long after I had just put them on & one replacement tire was going to cost me more than all 4 tires had. I said to hec with that on principal & just gave the other 3 away
Tire tech keeps getting better & better. I'm guessing that the GS D3's were kind of old as far as high performance rubber goes. If I get one more season out of mine I'll be happy, but then I'll have to find a replacement that I like as much as them. That may be a tall order.
Last tire-buying time I strayed & tried Kumho Ecsta XS. I have heard people rave about them at the track but frankly they suck for spirited street driving. My front tires spin 90% of the time when I take off in warm dry weather, they are very bad in rain, & in weather at or below freezing it feels like I am driving on 4 oiled rocks until they warm up. They are not one 100th of the tire that my Goodyears were. I will say that when they slide (& they lose traction frequently) at least it is a nice predictable slide
Plus, & I kid you not, I have only gotten around 5000 miles out of the front tires. I bought 2 more & now at 5000 they are to the wear bars again. The rears are fine though. Only 5K miles? That's freaking ridiculous!!

I too love the GY F1's. I ended up getting the BFG KDW and love them. About the same noise level and ride and every bit as grippy.

I also had a set of Kumho ASX tires. I agree with your thoughts on them. They were cheap & worth every penny. I was very glad when I wore them away at the track.
So far the GS D3's seem to be lasting better than the Kumho's. It will be a sad day when I use them up. They are so darned nice.

Well times are tough so I am going to squeeze every last mile out that these Kumhos have left in them (should last at least another week
) then I am going cheap. I narrowed it down to 2 tires... the Goodyear F1 Asymmetric ($143) & the Hankook Ventus V12 ($89). After talking to Alex at Tire Rack, the Goodyear is probably the better tire but the Hankook isn't far behind so for the money Hankook wins!!
Of course I used this same logic when I last purchased the Kumhos over the F1 GS-D3's last time around & we see how bad that turned out LOL
