Amplifier Install

Just bought an Alpine Type R 12' subwoofer and a crunch amp. I'm getting a custom box made soon.

I've got somebody who was a certified Best Buy installer who will install it for me, but we both don't know much about the X9331 connector. I've searched on the forum and haven't found anything helpful yet. What is it, and what do i need to do with it during the install? Do i have to order a new X9331?

So basically the front/rear channel swap is just to get better sound outa the sub? And i need to buy the tool (or make my own) to swap the channels?

The swap is done to move the rear signal that has little bass to the front speakers, and the front signal that has bass to the larger rear 6x9 speakers.

This is somewhat irrelevant if you are connecting an amp. With the standard audio you might want to use a CleanSweep or equivalent. With the HIFI you get full range at the X9331 connector.

Here is some more X9331 connector info:

Alright, but just to make this clear. I do not need to worry about the X9331 connector when connecting the amp, but if i want better sound quality (from the speakers, not the subwoofer) i should swap the channels? Or to get a better range of bass from the sub i should swap channels?

you do need to concern yourself with the x9331, not because of the channel swap. but because that is where you should grab the speaker leads for the speaker level inputs to your amp.

What miniSQ said + connect the inputs to your sub's amp to the front channels at the X9331 connector.

The original front or after i swap around the connectors?

According to the guy installing the system it doesn't matter which speaker we connect the amp to since we're going to be using a hi/lo adapter

it matters if you read the link i gave you. rear channels are rolled off at 100hz...so if you used the rear your sub would be rolled off at 100hz...thats not what you want.

use the front...and ditch the swap.....i was not showing you the lin to do the swap...just to try and educate you on the mini cooper OEM stereo characteristics.

Alright thanks. So i guess i'm not gonna do the swap and i'm gonna hook the amp up to a front speaker. Do i hook it up at the X9331? Or directly at any of the front speakers.

Sorry if i'm bein repetitive, i don't know anything about car audio, and i'm trying to learn.

No, don't connect the amp to a speaker. Connect it to the original front speaker channels in the X9331 connector.

If you are adding an amp, I'm not sure whether you would want to swap the front/rear channels. If you have bluetooth or PDC, I wouldn't.

In the speaker replacement guide, it says to get the speaker feed from the rear 6x9, but from everything i've just been told the rears are rolled off at 50 hz? I'm guessing the channel swap was already done?

I don't think the roll-off (at 100 Hz, IIRC) was discovered when the speaker replacement guide was started.
