R56 Pros and cons of black Minis
Pros and cons of black Minis
I'll start. One pro is that the black plastic wheel well trim matches the paint. One con is that it gets pretty hot inside in the summer. Please add to the list.
According to insurance studies, black is one of the least easy to see colors for other drivers. So, you are at greater risk of someone hitting you because they didn't see you. Dark earth colors (such as BRG) are also difficult to see. White and sliver are the easiest to see. So, it you get a black MINI, put a large bright racing stripe on it.
Because black absorbs heat, it will get hotter inside than a car with a light colored roof. As a result, you may be running A/C more, so lower mpg in hot weather.

Exactly, black is a showroom color. Put a clean black car with room to breath (no cars lined right up next to it) and it's the most beautiful a car can look. However in the real world black is alway too dirty (even driven 1 mile after a wash) except in the driveway after a wash and just dosn't have the show looking WOW when mixed with other cars.
Amen; you can't look at black without scratching or spotting it.

I bought my '09 white on black MCS during the cash for clunkers craze. The white top turned me off, but that was all they had, and I couldn't order with my clunker trade. So I bought what I could and started shopping for a decent body shop. It took 2 months, but I ended up going back to a shop I used for my WRX. They tinted the windows and sunroofs all with 20% and painted the mirrors and roof black. The car was noticeably cooler due to the window tint. The black roof didn't make that much of a difference since so much of it is sunroof anyway. Keep in mind, this was August in hell, er, Houston.
Unfortunately, you can't tint out dirty, so that is the biggest con for me. The fix is a local car wash that has a month plan. $20/month for a touchless wash, vacuum, hand dry, hand wipe down, and tire clean. I get washed MINIMUM once a week... even in the rain sometimes.

Everyone else has made good points.
Black looks awesome in the showroom, but looks dirty almost immediately once you're out and about. ANY imperfection in the paint shows up much more easily on a dark color than a lighter color. Heat can also be a concern (I find it hard to believe that anyone buys black cars here in the desert, where summer temps regularly eclipse 110f, and it's also dusty as hell here).
I've owned one black car (out of about 20 in my lifetime), and a friend told me back then that "everybody owns ONE black car sometime in their lifetime", and in my case, he was exactly right. Never again, I couldn't keep up with the necessary maintenance to keep it looking good, yet hated looking at it when it was even slightly dirty, which was virtually always. Also when you wax/buff/wash the car, you have to be perfect or shortcomings will show easily, such as wax residue, fine scratches, etc.
If you're willing to deal with the upkeep, black cars look great, including any MINI model. But consider the downsides before jumping.

Black cars, when washed and waxed are one of the best looking cars out there. Yes, they show flaws easily. But, white cars are really no different. Sometimes they show ground in grime and dirt after a few years. I look at my 4 year old Jet Black Cooper S and see how hard it is to maintain the finish. This in turn is also because the previous owner obviously had no idea how to maintain a finish. Also, I'm in Florida, and I actually haven't noticed where my MINI gets any hotter than any other car I've been in or own. Anyway, these things will never deter me from buying another black car. Black suits my mood.....DARK!!!!
My 2nd MINI will most definitely be black. The thing I'm struggling with is roof color.
(Just like others have said, black when clean is by far the best color for an automobile, any automobile. Heck, even with a dirty boot I wouldn't mind black)

I agree with the hard to keep clean issue. I've had mine since last Tue., and I've already washed it twice (and I already see the accumulation of dust starting). On the other hand, my last car was white, and although it could rarely showed how dirty it was, it never looked good when it was clean. Just blah. I'm getting a car cover. Hopefully that'll alleviate some of the problem.
Had a black car and vowed never to have one again. why?
Waterspots! Doesn't matter how much I wiped down that car, I had to park in open parking and the littlest mist or sprinkling of rain and the sun then baked the drops into nice little spots on the finish.
If it wasn't the obvious white waterspots, it was the type you'd see because of the etching on the black mirror finish.
Finally gave up on the waxing and wiping every other day...
