Sound Deadening (road noise, etc.)

This was copied from the speaker installation sticky thread so as not to hijack that thread with soundproofing discussion.

Given the foam is in 36"X54" sheets, how many sheets do you think I will need? I will also need an equivalent amount of the MLV. How pliable is the MLV? I also plan to use the CLD tiles, specifically on the doors and behind the 6X9s. Can I stick foam sheeting back there and some MLV on top of it? As I read the thread, if you don't treat the area behind the rear panels, the 6X9s will cause them to rattle. Do you think a layer of foam between the panel and the body will tighten that area up enough to prevent rattle? Can you give me a wild guess as to how many CLD tiles I should order, and do you think I can worm some of them onto the outside door? Thanks for the help,

Phil

First, let me say that my impression is that the front is as important, and maybe more so, than the back. The wheel wells are a big source of road noise. The floor in front of the seats is as well. The fresh air port (behind the battery) was designed to let engine noise into the car to enhance the sporty feel. Unfortuantely, it also lets in a lot of road noise.

If you are removing the rear seat, the rear does become more important. The seat insulates you from much of the sound coming through the rear.

The stuff I used was Quiet Barrier Vinyl from a site for building soundproofing. I later learned about Sound Deadener Showdown and bought a sheet of their CCF and glue. Quiet Barrier is probably the exact same stuff, but about twice as thick. That makes it twice as heavy (about 2 lbs per sq ft vs. 1 lb for MLV). Quiet Barrier is not very flexible, but at half the thickness, MLV should be better. Temperature will affect how flexible it is to some extent.

I've used up a full 4 x 8 ft sheet of Quiet Barrier. That is somewhere around 60 lbs. I can quickly remove about half of it, if I were going to AutoX or something.

I used about 40 sq ft. of Dynamat Extreme, but that was before I learned you don't need to cover every sq in. About half of that should have been enough.

Behind the 6.5" speakers in the doors I used Dynamat Dynaxorb Speaker Pak 11800. I think they would be better than the MLV because they don't have a flat smooth surface.

I've moved my 6x9 speakers out of the sides and put them here:

The removeable lid that goes between the 6x9 speakers is not shown. The carpet needs to be trimmed, fitted, and fastened on the floor, and wall with the amp.
