CAn it be programmed to start in sport mode?

Can mine be programmed to always start in SPORT Mode? It is a pain to always have to press the button everytime I start up the car... Let's face it we bought these turbo charged go carts to be be driven like this!

Here is a link to Dr Obnxs' FES site. Lots of nice 'goodies' there!

Definitely hard for me to reach down a press "sport" near the shifter well when I start my car

Its not hard, but something you have to do everytime you start your MINI is obviously set wrong.

There's a thread about it in the electrical mods section. There's at least one guy who sells a kit to do it.

This is the only mod I've made which involves surgery (very little of it), and its well worth it.

Definitely easier not to have to think about it every time you start the car. The module is a great add on.

I make a kit that turns on the sport button when you start up the car. Mach V sells it. It's really easy to install, the installation instructions are available on both the Mach V site and on NAM

but there are some of us that do not use Sport for everyday commutes of <5 miles. I rather like it the way it is--when I want to go Sport, I just press the button. gawd are we a lazy society, or what??

If you cut Sports mode off it stays off the next time you start the car (so what ever mode it's in when you cut the car off is what it will be when you star the car again). So it's not "* a lazy society" but a proper implementation of the way MINI should have done the Sport button.

For me I have a hard time adjusting to the poor accelerator response without Sports mode engaged. It is just so much easier to launch the car in Sports mode than when it's not regardless of the distance driven.

* Would you be happier (and less lazier) if there was no starter and we had to had crank it to start?

Yes we are lazy, and also clever. I never once drove my car in non-sport mode. It's really nice to not have to remember to push that button EVERY time, just get in, push start and go.

I use the sport button less than 10% of the time I'm driving (1-2 mile trips in heavy city traffic). Just because you prefer something doesn't make it right (nor does me prefering it make it right). Use some other argument to justify your position.

There are a couple of options out there.

there's an inexpensive DIY that uses a resistor, a diode, a cap and a relay. There's AmazingGrando's unit that does the sport mode as well. To give Amazing his due, his unit was out before ours, but it's a single function device and can't be programmed through the buttons. The FES unit does Sport mode, DSC mode selection and if your car has it, can do the auto Start/Stop mode selection. Once installed, the mode can be selected by using the buttons without going to the wiring (I took the wife's clubman in for one of it's free services and just turned the auto sport mode off as to not raise any eyebrows). There's also a unit from KB Technologies that does just the sport mode... I think OutMotoring sells them.

So there are lots of options out there.

Anyway, I like the one I make the best! (who's surprised there). If you're REALLY CHEAP, the DIY does the job. Prices vary from a bit over $40 to a bit under $60. The FES unit is $54.95.

But to answer the OPs question, no the dealer cannot program the car to do it automatically....

Maybe I'm an idiot ... I never use sport mode because I hate how it feels when I turn it off. I don't want to use it all the time for regular daily commuting because, well, I tempt fate enough in normal mode as it is. But it sure was fun the one or two times I did use it...

It's really quite silly that there isn't an option to enable sport mode all the time.

it's just that they're all aftermarket!

I think I will get the FES unit as I prefer to have the Sport Mode on at all times. I can't think of when I wouldn't want unless I found it caused problems on snow or ice coditions which we haven't had here yet this year.

You don't use it because you like it? Seems contradictory to me.

The people who do not use the Sport button obviously do not have a manual. I thought about getting something like this, but my brain knows to press the Sport button right after I turn the car on and move the shifter from 1st to N.

when i forget to turn on sport mode I damn near stall the car because i don't put enough pressure on the gas pedal. i definitely prefer the more linear feel of sport mode.

...that's why it was worth the $40 to me. $40 for a quicker start and without the fear of embarrassment: what a bargain. I also like the road feel of the steering much better in Sport. Very much dislike the over boosted, feather touch "Cadalic" steering without Sport mode engaged.

That's true, sport mode in the automatic is like trying to control a wild animal. The auto in manual mode is not so bad. My manual 07 was always driven with the sport button on...

Gawd so glad I do not have the Jane Jetson push a button problem (I think in that episode of the Jetsons she had to go to a doctor)
Sorry NOT going to plug in an add on to my 33 thousand dollar car so it starts in sport mode? and if any problems come up because of this 40 dollar add on ya think MINI will cover it?
Now when I start my car I want a 40 dollar add on to do unspeakable things not found in a cartoon.

When I had an MCa Clubman as a loaner, I had to put it in Sport mode to keep it from shifting too soon on the steep winding grade up Hwy 17 over the Santa Cruz Mts. I hadn't figured out the paddle shifters on the drive home from MINI of Mountain View so the Sport button became a transmission control button.
