Advice/opinions needed on trade-in

I'm a owner of 08 MCS hardtop with sport suspension, LSD, HID, rear fog, multi function steering wheel options. I was thinking of selling my Mini for S2000 or latest generation MX-5 (something RWD). My car has around 18000 miles, and in very clean condition. MSRP for the car was around $24k. I've been offered $18k on the trade-in. Although I think this is low, it is fairly consistent with value from edmunds, but lower than KBB value. Ideally, private sale would be the way to go, but trade-in saves money on tax, as I only pay for the difference on the new car price and the trade-in value (~$100).

The practical side of me says not to trade the car in as the car is only 16 months old. I don't expect to accrue mileage for next year or so as I live close to work now. I also think the Mini will see less depreciation by next one or two years, as it had taken the most hit in the first year. I'm leaning towards keeping the Mini, but the deals on the convertibles I looked at are also about ~$2k below average book value, so it's been tempting.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you driven the S2000 and MX-5? I test drove an S2000 on winding country roads before deciding on an MCS. I thought the MCS was more fun to drive. Also, the suspension on the S2000 was amazingly harsh. Make sure that is something you want to live with.

Yes, I drove S2000 and MX-5 on extended test drive. S2000 is firmer ride, but it is liveable for me. MCS is fun due to low end torque, but I liked the feel in the S2000 (convertible plus rwd). What's your thoughts on the trade-in? I definitely think it's on the low side, so it's tough to make the decision. Plus, I still like the Mini..

I always sell privately, and I don't change cars often. Last car I sold was in 1989. I still have the new car I bought then. Yesterday was its 20th anniversary.

Are you looking at a new S2000? Keep in mind the 09 is likely the end of the line for the S2000 and the redesign was nixed a year or so ago. Not sure if this is a plus or a minus but the design is differently showing it's age (like non bootable top). No doubt it's 4 in-wheel wishbone suspension w/RWD, mid mounted engine (FMR), high revving /fantastic sounding, lower seating/stance, topless Roadster "feel" and superior 6 speed make a great fun driving car.

Also I owned one (2001) for 4 years, 50,000 miles (longest I've ever owned a car) and literally not 1 single time did it need any kind of service (excluding routine). Honda knows how to build an engine/car.

You stated specifically why I'm interested in S2000. I'm looking at 06+ AP2 S2000 used, as their residual value is close to my MCS (depending on mileage). I didn't want to spend much to trade MCS for S2000.

I also heard that Honda will discontinue them after this year, so more I want it. Plus the undeniable reliability of S2000. Nice picture, car btw.

Tough for others to advise on this because we don't know how bad you want to switch. Bottom line is that if the net cost of the deal is a price you can afford and you want it badly enough you should go for it. Just make sure you know what you can afford. Keep in mind your job situation and the economic conditions.

For me, I'd have to want it pretty badly to make a trade unless I'm coming out ahead on the trade-in.

That said, I can empathize. I went with the MCS over the MX5 mainly for utility and front-drive practicality in bad weather. I'm hoping to keep the MINI forever as a practical car and ultimately get back to a roadster as my fun car.

Thanks,
I really wish I had keep it (I'd have an extra $30,000 and still be driving a great car) but times were good in 04 and new car fever was high and MB had the new SLK. The SLK AMG 55 had all the "bells and whistles" the S lacked plus BIG V8 power/sound but it never captured the passion and fun to drive of the S2000.

Fortunately my MCS has many of the "bells and whistles" of the MB with most of the driving passion of the S2000. If only it was a JCW's Speedster (Roadster)...

I have owned numerous S2000s and they are fantastic cars. They offer a raw experience that is unmatched in its price range. I just got rid of my 08 CR and it leaves tomorrow, and surly will not be my last. I also have a 09 JCW that is my DD and extremely pleased with it on the street and track. You will miss the MINI for is everyday funtionality.

Thanks for advice. What makes this decision tough is that I still like the Mini for being fun to drive, semi-practical, and economical. Ideally, I'd own both...

I love my s2000. I've been looking at getting an MCS as a daily driver to compliment it. Go to s2ki.com for all the information you will ever need about the s2k. Check the for sale forum on there for some good deals. I would advise you to drive both an ap1 and ap2 before making a decision. Each have there advantages and if you find that you like the ap1 more, you will save a significant amount of money. Make sure to get an 02+ no matter what though so you get the glass rear window.

I will tell you that 18k for a trade is not bad. I just bought an 08 with 16k miles with a 28k sticker and got it for $20,000. That was a private sale if this helps you any......................
