007 GloveBox - Calling Creative Tuners

Okay guys, I have an idea and not clue how to approach it. If you all have seen Casino Royale, you may recall the glove box in Bond's Astin Martin. In Missouri its completely, totally, 100% leagal to carry a gun in the car. My plan? A Bond-style glove box to hold a Glock 21 .45 ACP and magazines. Any thoughts on where to start?

Get another glovebox to cut up, lol.

It would be easier to work with outside the car.

Oh, by the way, I'm not insane just so you all know. I just need it readily accessible and thought this would be another unique addition.

I'll definitely need to remove it to work on I agree.

Why do you need a gun?

Surely the lower fog lights could hold much more effective RPGs.

Well since 9/11 its become harder for my guy to get RPGs... Otherwise I'd just have Stinger Missiles behind my headlights.

My thoughts are that this would be the same as any other customization of the glove box. So I'm surprised no one has any ideas.

Maybe not that many of us are gun enthusiasts?

There are several glove box organizers available from vendors, maybe one of those would be a good starting point?

Are you trying to make it concealed behind a secret door like in the movie, or just hidden from view till needed?

you'd be much better off just getting your CCW and carrying it on you. The time it would take to reach for and dig out of the glove box when need would be to great. If you really want to do the trick hidden gun shelf I'd suggest doing something with a euro parcel shelf.

Max- I also have a CHL and have been thinking of a good spot to keep a handgun in my MINI. I have to think that the hidden glove box would be a great spot to keep it concealed, but not quickly accessible since you have to reach across the car and open the door. It kind of seems like the seat adjustment bar under the driver's seat also kind of prevents that area from being a suitable location. I am eager to see your solution!

Get some drawer sliders, build a small drawer to fit, wrap it in a matching fabric, slide it out and put in a base foam layer then a cut out layer for the gun, and I'd suggest separate cut outs for magazine if you need to be in a state where it's supposed to be unloaded. A good knife and good scissors and this shouldn't be that hard. I'd also re-enforce the walls of the outside of the glove box and use screws from the inside to locking washers outside to secure the drawers so that if the box is open and there's an accident then nothing is getting outright launched about the cabin.

Put it all in the top 2in of the glovebox and you should have room below for manuals ins card reg etc.

As always carry legally safely and responsibly.

I like the suggestion from Motor On. Whether you go with the drawer idea or just leave it as a flip-down, foam is a good way to go.

How about in the driver door pocket at the bottom of the door? I don't know if a 21 will fit height wise in this area, but it's worth a check for fit. You could fab up some kind of locking lid for this area.

It's not the legal carrying citizens they have to worry about.

I think the door pocket would be a good idea, but somewhat of an awkward draw. Under the seat would be the most convenient probably. I don't think there's enough room to the right of the drivers seat, some cars that works.

I think if you were to use a solid holster such as the Blackhawk SERPA or a Safariland you could screw/attach it to the inside of the door pocket, giving you a secure holster to draw from. If you go that route, you could always mount it backwards for a cross draw assuming you are right handed.

Good luck, looking forward to see what you come up with. I may be on the look out for a solution similar too. Urban campus in a big city = not very secure.

Yes, well SLU is a dangerous campus, especially on the East end where I'll be starting next semester. As for a CCW, I have a small complication with that because of a dumb thing I did as a teenager. Regardless, I agree with MotorOn. This could be interesting. I'll keep you posted.

Does anybody have one of the glove box organizers? How sturdy are they? Seems like a good platform to build on

I carry but would never leave a pistol in the glove box--that is the first place a thief would look. I would share my ideas but then they would not be secret any longer...

Think out of the box; there are better places.

I'd be very happy to share, just pm or email me' but sarcasm/criticism for not revealing secret hiding places on the internet does not make sense. A hiding place is a HIDING PLACE only make if it is secret, you know. :-)

It seemed other comments here were conjecture, ideas or suggetions, not actual hiding places.

Also I did give a hint in my post...

Then you should have stated that in your original post so that others wouldn't be wondering why you even posted in the first place.

yes.....http://www.pickupspecialties.com/Con...sole_vault.htm

But please keep in mind that is some states like Virginia and New York it is illegal to have one, even for valuables.....so don't get caught. And it should only be used while your vehicle is occupied for a long trip or something....otherwise I agree with post above, wear it in a comfortable rig.

There are holsters that are meant to be screwed or glued under a desk or drawer that would hold a pistol. Look on eBay, there are several that routinely appear there. http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/Vie...Item=126876208

There are also gunsafes specifically made for vehicles http://www.center-of-mass.com/Store_InCarGunSafe.htm and auto holsters http://www.securityandsafetysupply.c...protech-8.html

Regardless remember that concealed really means concealed in many states. If you go to Ohio and are stopped, the trooper can sit in your seat and if they can reach the pistol while seated, you get arrested (unless you have a CCW). In some states transporting a loaded weapon (or even an unlocked weapon) is there same as carrying concealed.

CAREFULLY check the laws. Many forums and sites out ther about concealed and open carry http://www.usacarry.com/ http://www.defensivecarry.com/ etc

Here are Missouri's. http://www.usacarry.com/missouri_con...formation.html

Not to say that you are misinformed, but according to this http://www.nraila.org/statelawpdfs/MOSL.pdf you cannot bring a firearm onto a College or University Campus... University facilities would include parking areas

correction in edited post: see http://opencarry.org/mo.html Open Car Carry You may open and conceal carry in a vehicle at age 21 without any permit, or at 18 "while traveling".

I know the campus thing could be an issue, but I'm sure with his as is mine, its an urban campus in the middle of a big downtown. I will be living few blocks away in a house or apartment and would never have my car on the actual campus, or if I had to take my car on campus I would leave the weapon at home. I'm sure thats the same situation as the OP.

I mainly want a handgun for 'home' protection if I rent a house in the fall. Crazy stuff goes on in that downtown, lots of bars and also homeless people. Car vandalism and home break ins are very common throughout the downtown area. The other week someone tried to rob an AA meeting at gunpoint downtown, a member with his CCW shot and killed him before he could harm anyone. That was in the middle of Columbia, SC beside USC's campus and near all the houses mostly rented by students..

Thanks for the great resources, I will definitely read them all before deciding on purchasing a firearm. I have a friend with his CCW and about to graduate with a criminal justice degree and he has talked with me about a lot of SC's law regarding the matter.

Firearms aside, building a slide-out drawer for the glove box with foam cutouts for useful items like a flashlight, radio, iPod, etc might be really cool...
