Opinions on audio upgrades

I just got an 06 Cooper S (non-H/K), and I'm wanting to upgrade the sound system. I think I have everything down after reading numerous threads on this forum and mini2, but before I start spending the cash, I'd like some feedback.

First, for the headunit: Clarion CZ509. Gives full Bluetooth capability (calls and streaming audio) and iPod functionality.

I also like the Sony MEX - BT5700u, but it's $100 more and doesn't seem to be on sale anywhere at the moment (even though it's on Sony's site).

Sub: I scored a JL Audio 8.1 Microsub on eBay for $25. Just need to figure what I'll power it with, assuming it arrives in good condition.

Amps and component speakers. Here's where I run into trouble and need some feedback. I haven't bought any equipment in a few years and it seems I have lost track of what's good and what's not. Speakers - I'm thinking Infinity Perfect or JL Audio components. I've read Focal is good too. Any help? Same with amplification. A 5-ch would be nice so I only had to wire once, but they are pretty expensive. The Alpine that is oft recommended here is out of my price range ($200-400 max for the amp). Again any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Don

I do not know about head units or subs, so I can't help there.

Those Kappa Perfects might be too much speaker for a $200 to $400 amp, if you want any measure of quality.

JL Audio might have some lower watt RMS speaker that could work, as does Infinity.

If I were interested in upgrades, I'd first think about better sound insulation so I could really hear the upgrades.

Don't do it (the DPSM). I have had one for about a year and a half (though the amp only worked for the first year). The amp went out and I took it to a dealer for warranty work. That was the beginning of January; the amp still hasn't been replaced. Every time I call the dealer they say it's on order but hasn't gotten in yet, they'll call the regional guy and find out where it is. I have yet to have they call me back on it. Either MINI USA's supply chain is in terrible shape or this dealer's been lying to me about ordering it (not sure why they'd do that). MINI USA is getting a call when they open...actually it's 9:30 now - looks like I know what I'm doing after I hit submit.

Based on my experience I'd say stick with aftermarket. I'm starting to wish I had. It may not be as easy to install yourself, but I suspect that I wouldn't have this difficulty replacing an amp from an aftermarket company that I'm having now.

I take it the DPSM amp is proprietary? Just another reason to stay away from it.

Clarion cz509 with 2006 MCS HK

Hello,

I bought the cz509 HU to replace my factory HK unit but was wondering if getting the wiring harness, atenna adapter, and in-dash receiver kit from crutchfield or amazon is workable?

been reading the guides from http://www.newministuff.com/new/inde...ion=13&diyid=6 and http://www.gbmini.net/wp/2005/04/new..._installation/

Do i really need the HK enabler to use with the factory amp or will the harness from crutchfield do the job? I'm going to go ahead and say Thank You for any help my fellow mini owner's can provide.

The first thing I would recommend before you do anything is sound deaden your car with whatever product you choose. You tunes will sound 200 % better in the end.

I kept my stock head unit and got a a JL Clean sweep and a Dice Ipod interface. It works with your CD changer controls and steering wheel controls. I have a 16 gig Nano stashed under my dash and it all looks factory. (That was the look I was going for) I have over 8,000 songs in my iPod and I just make playlist and access them via the HU. Oh and everything displays on the HU display. Artist, song, Album, playlist...ect.

A JL clean sweep http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_cleansweep.php?prod_id=369
will correct your factory head units EQ defects and supply you 2 pairs of RCA outputs for your amps. I have one feeding a 4 ch for the 4 speakers and 1 Mono block for my 10 inch sub.

One Amp you may want to look into is the new JL HD 5 channel amp!
(100 watts x 4 and 500W x 1) It’s a small little powerful beast that will fit under one of your seats and run everything.

I had the old version of "Q" MB Quarts up front but one finally blew and I had to replace them. IMO the new MB Quarts are not as good. I had the same set of MB Q's in 3 different cars.

I have Memphis MClass separates up front right now but will be upgrading to Focals soon. In the rear I have a set of Infinity Kappa 6x9's for rear fill and they sound great.

My sub is in a NAM vendors custom MDF/Fiberglass molded factory carpet matching 10" sub box. I think its sound designs??? Not cheap but looks perfect with a Memphis 10 MClass Sub for now. I will be upgrading my sub to a JL 10 w 3 very soon also.

I am not sponsored by anyone and pay for all my own audio but I am a huge JL Audio fanboi.

Sorry I haven't really been following this thread. If you search, you'll see my thread on what I settled on. I am very pleased with the final result.

I have to second Chili Mini PA. I sound deadened the crap out of my car and it has really helped.
