Crack open tail light

Hi,

I had my tail lights tinted with laminX film until today...(got pulled over by a cute oinky). So I'm trying to change it up a bit.

Has anyone painted the chrome surround inside the tail light lens? I'm guessing I need to crack open the lens? How would I crack it open and what should I use to re-glue it back on?

Thanks for the help guy!

what kind of lamin x did you have? curious as to why someone would give you a hassle over it...

painting the tails have been done...a lot. should be several threads already discussing it.

silicone works nicely as a sealant.

also, if you have post facelift lights beneath the chrome is the red.
pre facelift (02-04) it's black plastic.

Perfect!! Thank you so much for the link! I shall try this in May when I have some time.

Yeah, the cop pulled me over mostly for my front window tints. Then he made a full round around my car and found the film on my taillight. He was nice about it though. He wasn't an *** hole like some cops I've encountered before.

Is cutting the lens open easy with dremmel tool?

I think de-chromed OEM (ones with white center) looks better than full out tinted lights...

Do you guys agree?

i used to think tinted tails were cool and good looking until 2 things happened.
1) i started getting pulled over for it and ticketed for it
2) i followed a friend with tinted tails and i couldnt really see their brake lights come on in broad day light.

They sell them at bimmian.com for $125!!!

I ordered a pair yesterday. I can't wait to crack them open and get that ugly chrome painted!!

I'll take some pictures once I get it done this weekend.

Keep in mind those aren't OEM, the OEM's are $250+ I believe. $125 shipped is a good deal though, definitely the nicest looking taillights for the 02-04 cars.

Do you mind taking pictures of them while they're apart? I've always wanted to fit some LED strips in there and wonder how easy/hard it would be. TIA.

I'll take some detailed pictures for you guys. I'm a dental student and a teaching assistant. I enjoy writing detailed answers to some questions from students. So why not a detailed write up for mini.

Are these same lights offered by MINI? I thought all of them were aftermarkets...

Oh by the way, how do you undo those clips on the tail lights when removing them? I can't seem to figure out how to unclip them...

There should be a 10mm nut holding the assy in. Then disconnect the connector. Then pull the whole light out. Then push on the black tab and remove the bulb holder.
