Aftermarket Nav unit in place of stock Nav

Hi, I searched about 5 pages on the forum and couldn't find a suitable answer, so please excuse this noob question.

I have a 05 non S with factory Nav. My wife, who drove a Lexus before, hates this system. She prefers a touch screen. I happen to have a Pioneer double din AVIC D3 nav unit ready to go in. I was wondering, if this is can of worms I want to open? Is it hard to take out the stock nav unit and replace it with a double din Pioneer unit? I can have my stereo shop fab a trim piece and have it fit in there, but as far as wiring and having it work with the stock speakers etc, is that something I should even try?

I also have a 08 VW R32 and that came with nav, taking that out and replacing it with the pioneer was simple and took my installer about 30 min to do. Im not sure if its the same with the mini.

Also, if I do attempt to do this, is the factory nav re-sellable? How much can I get on average for the factory nav system? when I have the installers take it out, anything specific I should look out for (easily missed) when they pull out to resell with it?

Thanks in advance

The Nav display is not an independent unit that can simply be ripped out. Its circuit board also controls the other gauges (tach and speedo).

So there is no way to run an aftermarket double din nav unit in its place?

There are a couple of serious problems. First, the space available behind the Nav screen is very shallow. Even if you found a way to enlarge the space, you would have to keep the existing electronics -- move it somewhere and keep it connected so that your speedo and tach would continue to work, and then you'd need a way to display the fuel gauge and warning lights.

It is possible to install a double din in the center console, although that has issues of its own: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...r-console.html
