Double Din Head Unit in Center Console?

I was wondering if anyone has managed to modify the center console to allow for a double din head unit to fit in instead of the standard single fin. I did see a MINI where the owner modified the space to allow for a 7" monitor for use with a carputer, but i was hoping to simply put in a double din DVD based head unit with navigation.

If no one has done this does anyone have any suggestions as to how to do this? I'd like to keep it looking as factory as possible.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but behind the climate controls, there is something that can't be moved. A Double-din headunit would be too thick to fit. It's a white module. I saw it when installing my new headunit.

I have the manual AC controls and didnt want to bother with trying to Fab a bunch of arms to retain AC controls.

Also be very careful with Double DIN units as some are so deep they will not seat fully inside without cutting the interior climate control blower motor housing.

I have seen a Double DIN mounted under the toggles angled sharply up with a custom fiberglass molding surround, however since most Double DIN units have a flip face you'd have to be in 2,4,6th gear to change CDs, as well as having to look past your knees for navigation... just didnt seem right.
