Anyone interested in doing the "Joey Mod"?

I was just curious if anyone was interested in getting some people together and "joey modding" there head lights. I have done it once before on a my 2005 Honda Civic SI. I was going to do it at my house soon and I figured I would check to see of anyone else would like to join in.

Ok so no responses...just to clarify I wouldn't be doing the "joey mod" for you. Just figured two heads are better than one and if anyone was interested they could do their own lights while I was doing mine, you could use my stove so you don't have to supply that. Thanks.

Actually, I'm VERY interested but have never done anything like it before...the risk of messing up what are very expensive lights (2006 MCS w/ zenon's) has until now scared me off.

I want to do the mod in blue with the projector in white (matches color scheme of car.)

I'd like to do this before AMVIV...can you recommend the right kind of paint that will hold up and not peel or crack?

You know I used Krylon paint and it wasn't heat resistant. I am going to use plasti-dip...I have read about some others doing there lights w/this and they have had no problems. I only have black, but it does come in other colors like blue & white. The good thing about plasti-dip is that if you don't like it you can peel it right off. I have used it on other parts of my car and have had no problems.

I have a can of white Plasti-Dip already, so I'm good to go. This weekend and next is bad for me but after that let me know when.

I have no idea what I'll be doing so counting on you to lead the way!

Definitely not this coming weekend...because I'm a Steeler fan & obviously I will be watching them win the Super Bowl.

I will send you a message in a couple of days so we can see what works out. Talk to you later.

Sin MINI, I'll do it at AMVIV for you if you don't get it done by then. You bring the paint and a cardboard box to paint in. for the '06 you may not even need an oven just a sunny Vegas day. I'll have the tools. I've done at least 3 that I remember.

Good chance I'll take you up on that...the time between now and AMVIV is really filling up fast. Of course, in March is isn't really that hot yet...

Another good reason is that Lyle (Vinyl Styles) will be installing headlight rings there...good time to do both.

It doesn't take much heat to soften up the adhesive its rtv silicone so basically anything over room temp is soft. I'll see you there.

Cool. Still vacillating between color (All white or mostly blue with white projectors). Some Joey-newb questions:

1) Does the projector part separate from the rest of the paintable part(s) to make color separation easy?

2) What brand/type of paint is best? Heard of folks using high-temp rustoleum (apparently made for barbecues?), wondering if that makes sense (and if I can find a shade of blue that's at least close to HB).

3) Lots of folks now using Plasti-dip if a basic color is all you need...any experience with that?

The two separate easily once you know how they do it. As to color you can always change it. Just pick a blue that is as close as possible to your color.

I used duplicolor engine ceramic in low gloss black but there isn't enough heat in the headlight to need high temp. The red is just plain old rustoleum. I personally don't like plasti-dip it isn't paint so coverage isn't as predictable (and dry times are longer).

Mine

My Wifes' (all low gloss black -incl. mirror caps)

I've seen pictures of your head lights before & I really like the way they look. I thought about doing it the same but then I got a carbon fiber hood & I'm not sure how it would look...the rest of my car is dark silver metallic. Anywho I like your head lights

is it still carbon fiber or painted?

CooperGear will do the insides of your headlights for you. quite a bit more pricey but unique

Bit over the top for me...but then I'm not a CF guy. If I were building an airplane or a race car I'd understand, but bits of CF sprinkled around the a car looks (to me) like someone who just has too much $$ too spend

It was directed at SunDevil. If he has the cf showing doing the joey in cf look wouldn't be bad. I tend to agree when it comes to CF though do it for weight savings not for looks.

Back online after a few weeks. I've wanted to do this to my MINI for a long time but been concerned about messing it up and having to replace my lights. I have an 03 with regular old halogens. I want black.

I also need to open up my tail lights and re-tint them. They are off the car at least, since I have a spare set.

AllBlack05S - to answer your question, yes mostly I did the CF for weight and a bit for looks. I have the CF hood & Hatch, my car like I said is Dark Silver Metallic w/a Black roof so it looks as if I have one large black stripe down the middle of my car. I will be getting the M7 grilles so it will all tie in very nicely.

Sin MINI - I really don't have a lot of money to spend I just know what I want and save for it. But your right it was expensive but not as expensive as it could've been.

I have heard the pre facelift cars are a pain as the adhesive was much stronger requiring heat and cutting. The tails require you to cut them apart iirc then just clear silicone to seal.

Sounds nice for sure. Wish I had the budget for cf panels to save the weight (read that offset my weight)

Well hopefully I'll be able to see your car @ AMVIV. Just out of curiousity...you wouldn't be interested in SportMax rims (17's), there black w/a red lip? I plan on selling them (cheap) for one because they just don't go w/my MINI anymore & two they have two small chips on the lip (stupid MINI dealership).

Sundevil, post about the rims on the club forum at http://www.sincityminiclub.com/phpbb/ (if you aren't a member yet, or aren't validated, let me know) or just bring them down to AMVIV. If the price is right, someone will buy them I'm sure.
Are they for 12mm or 14mm wheel bolts?

Thanks, I will post them and see what happens. I have to find out for sure but I believe they are 14MM.

What do folks recommend as a primer on the chrome?

AllBlack05S...if it does happen that I take you up on this (I want to be done before then but not looking likely), what day are you arriving? I'll be working the event some, concerned about a day I'll need my car (to maybe lead a run )

The chrome is a pain, I wound up stripping it (used a dremel and a flat wire brush) came off in seconds. Those thin flexible sanding sponges or good old sand paper work too they just take longer and the crevices aren't fun.

I'll be arriving Weds nite, but that will be after leaving Chicago Tuesday morning and driving the 1741 miles so your results may vary if I help on Weds.

With disassembly, stripping, paint, drying and reassembly I was doing a car in about 3 hours.
