R50/53 Brake light mod question.
I read through all the posts that I could find about this mod, but still could not find the answer to my question. So, here it is.
Is there a way to have the rear fog lights/brake light mod be turned on when the lights are on? In other cars when you turn the lights on the brake lights illuminate, but when you depress the brake pedal those lights get brighter. From what I understand about the brake light mod, when the lights are on the "new brake lights" are off until the brake pedal is depressed. I would really like to have those light illuminated when the lights are turned on and not just when I depress the brake pedal.
Thanks in advane.

It would take some modification to the bulb holder to get the upper light to function as both a running light and a brake light. The lower red bulb is a 2 filament bulb, but I believe the upper bulb is a 1 filament bulb.
The answer hinges on whether the upper light bulb and socket are a dual filament style
It shouldn't be hard to do if they are a dual filament style. However I don't have the wiring diagram to verify but if they are;
The current brake light mod taps (or bridges) pins 1 and 4. If the upper bulb is dual style then it's a simple addition of another bridge from the running light pin to the "other" upper input pin.
If I remember correctly, this connector is a 6 pin connector but only wired with 5 pins.
Brake
Running
Turn
Fog
?
Anyone got an idea?
Edit: Man, really I started my answer then had to ah..... leave the computer for a minute or two, and MiniTron hadn't posted yet

Yes the top Fog lights are 1 filiment bulbs... I have done the break light mod but mine does not (the fog lights) function as driving lights... It shouldnt be hard tho right? just but 2 filiment bulbs and find the running light pin and hook that up to the fog pin too... U can experiment...

In theory it is very simple but in practice it becomes very complicated. The installation of the 2 filiment bulb is the complication. See this thread about "tail light disassembly" for some of the experiments that were done.

The answer seems to be that the tail lights cannot be disassembled with heat, they are 1-piece injection molded assemblies. To get to the bulb you will have to make incisions in the back of the light assembly to gain access. There are further complications but I think once past this basic hurdle the bulb can be replaced.
I may know soon.

There is no need to disassemble the actual taillight assembly to install dual filament bulbs, just removing the bulb holder and modding it is all that is necessary. THe problem is that the holder is a one-piece unit with no easy provisions for a dual filament lampholder. What would be needed is to basically cut out the existing area and the connectors and tracks and a new dual filament bulb holder affixed into this space. Not impossible, but quite involved.
