Hey guys--just lookin' for some feedback....

When my car sits at idle something under the bonnet makes a ticking noise. It sounds like a mechanical part--not just something loose and rattling--but I can't be for certain because I just now thought that I should maybe raise the bonnet while idling to check things out (will do that). The closest thing I can compare it to is my mother's old Saturn, which used to tick when it was low on oil. But this being my only comparison I check the oil neurotically and it's not low.

Thoughts?

PS--it's an MCS, if that makes a difference.

Could it be a belt that has gone slick? I had a strange noise coming from under the hood, and thats what it was.

The tolerances on eaton blowers are very loose. The rattling is probably the rotors inside the supercharger.

All your trip across country you got a little too close to the truth in Roswell. The Government is preparing to silence you.... with extreme prejudice!

Could it be the oil lifters, i.e. valve adjustment? This ticking is actually pretty normal on my E30 BMW.

Trip cross country? I don't recall any trip cross country... Did I drive cross country? Did I visit Roswell? Where is Roswell...? Rosebud?

Thanks for all the feedback. I gots to check the belts although, honestly, the way everything is crammed under my bonnet I can generally locate absolutely nothing of any consequence whatsoever. Sometimes I peek under the hood of my Omni just to get a sense of those wide open spaces... As far as oil lifters and rotors--are these things that can/need to be adjusted, or do I just suck it up, cupcake?

Mine makes a kind of ticking noise when at idle, when I depress the clutch
it goes away. This is a MCS with just over 2,000. miles, the clutch has never
been abused. Does that sound like the same thing you have.

Nope the supercharger rotors should rattle on almost all the cars... some more that others depending on where they are tolerancewise. I know mine do!

On my '96 Jetta 2.0L you could hear the fuel injectors ticking as they fire if you were stopped with the windows open, and the stereo turned low. I searched high and low for the source when I first got the car.

Lately, i've noticed a ticking from around 3500 to 4500 rpm in second gear only. Where, and at what speed is yours?

I can only hear the ticking while at idle. This is not to say that it's not happening while travelling, but if it is there are too many other noises that o'ershadow it.

I had a similar noise; ticking with transmission out of gear, and clutch released. The noise went away when I pressed on the clutch, and I could make louder if I released the clutch quickly. It sometimes sounded like a really loose tappet.

I've been told that its not uncommon to hear this *a little.* In my case, it was quite noisy. I complained to the dealer, and they replaced my transmission.
