One unlocks the door, the second opens it. Yup.

Yes I believe you can program it to not lock the doors when you start moving, but you'll have to check out the manual for that. I find it quite comforting that my MINI does lock me in. It makes me feel all tucked in and cozy

You can program your key to NOT lock the doors when the car starts rolling. You'll need to do it to both keys

I would strongly recommend that you have your doors locked when your vehicle is moving. The "double-pull" is easy to do, and you quickly become accustomed to it. You can turn the auto-lock feature off if you prefer.

Can I ask what you mean by this statement? What is the "it" when you refer to locking the doors? Once the doors are locked, whether by the key fob, pushing down the manual lock button in the door, by the toggle-switch door lock on the central column or when the car automatically does so, if you try to manually pull the interior door handle, the action of the once-to-unlock twice-to-open is the only option. This is mechanical and cannot be changed.

As others have mentioned, if you turn to page 22 of your 2007 MINI Cooper Owner's Manual, under the header of "Automatic Locking" it explains what automatic locking functions are available and how to change them. E.g. whether you want to have the car automatically lock the doors once you start moving.

Having to pull the handle twice is strange at first but now I catch myself doing that in all cars...

The "it" refers to the car in general. If you set it to not autolock as on page 22, then it seems like you wouldn't have to pull the handle twice since it was already unlocked. But if you are right, and it is purely mechanical in nature, then I guess the first pull would be for nothing in the non-autolock mode. I guess I will have to try it out. But I think I may be able to used to the 2 pulls since everyone else has. Thanks for all the advise fellow NAMers!

My car does not autolock (set it up that way at delivery), and I only pull the doorhandle once to open the door. If I manually lock the car with the console toggle, then I need to either unlock or pull twice to get out.

I like having the car automatically lock the doors when I am moving.

If I'm parking at work or some other place where I just want to get out of the car, and then plan to relock it, I pull twice to unlock the driver's door. If I'm parking in my garage, I use the central lock toggle to unlock the doors and hatch before I get out of the car. Then I can get into any door without a key when I come back into the garage.

It was strange to "operate" this way at first, but I'm accustomed to it now.

Its a BMW thing! If the doors are locked you have to double pull the door handle. The first time unlock's the door. If the door is unlocked, pulling the door handle will open the door.
Or, if the door is locked, you can unlock the door with the door unlock switch on the console, then because the door is unlocked at that point, one pull will open the door.

There's only two things I hate pulling the handle twice. (why I reprogrammed mine)

a) having to tell people where the freakin' door handle is to get out of the car.

b) having to tell people they have to pull it one more time because when they did finally find it, they pulled it once and nothing happened.

I've never quite understood that, doesn't it look like a handle?

I worry about them pulling the handle off, as they try increasingly hard to make it work on the first pull.

I programmed the doors never to lock. In the Mk1 MINIs I programmed them to auto-unlock as well. R56s don't have that option.

It's an Audi thing and probably a lot of other car's thing too.

Mine don't lock when the car is moving. I didn't program them that way, that's the way they came.I don't want my locks to lock automatically, so it's fine with me.

Thank you!!! What exactly do they think that chrome piece is for? It's like almost every person that tries to get out of my car (that has never been in a mini) gets stuck in there and looks at me like I just asked them the 64000 question and they don't know the answer.
