Which tires for first track day?

I'm going for my first track day next week and need some advise on tires. I have two sets to choose from and I realize that neither is going to be very good, but I need some advise on which ones to run.

The first set are the 195/55/16 Goodyear Excellence runflats that came on the car. The second set are 215/45/17 Kumho Ectsa AST's. Eventually I hope to get a set of Dunlop Star Specs, but this is all I've got to work with for now.

The forecast for the track day is 76 degrees and bright sun.

Doesn't matter. Learn to drive with the tool you have on the track first. When you find the tires are limiting you then worry about about which ones to use. If you have never done this before it's not going to make much of a difference.

Haev you read any of the Track Experience articles in the NAM Alliance Magazine. You may find them most helpful in preparing yourself and he car for the track date. See my sig to download the latest, all are availble for download on the Alliance page. You don't have to be a member. Graham - Tracktoy - has quite a series going.

Thanks for the input. I'll take a look at those articles.

+1

Your first track experience is going to be one of learning technique and getting some core experience. You won't be pushing anything near the limits, so tires aren't going to make a lot of difference. Once you start working your way up the pack and start getting faster, traction will be the first improvement in equipment you'll need to make. That's the point where you make the decision on tires.

p.s. this may become more expensive later.
