Racing Harness question

im about to install a set of racing harnesses and i was wondering....i saw sometime ago a bracket that attached to either the headrest guides or the back of the seat that acts as a guide and holder for the shoulder harnesses

any ideas?

what's the application - road racing, or autocross?

Schroth works beautifully for autocross, it is a 4 point system that some folks think falls short of being fully road race spec...

I to had seen the harness bar you are trying to find. The one I saw had brackets that mounted to the top seat belt mounts.

I thought it was a Brey-Krause part but this is all I can find on their webpage now:
http://www.bkauto.com/mini/r1305.php

I did find the following link to someone who made a bracket like I remember seeing. The link has many pictures of manufacturing and installation.

I think it was mossmini that had them but quit handling them as they broke
shortly after being installed.

at the risk of posting the obvious

when you get them installed, and adjusted to your driving position, and "just so"...

1. slide seat fully back to release belts and get out
2. when entering, start with seat fully back, connect the belts, and then slide forward into them

3. when encountering pucker factor - slide seat one tiny notch closer to the wheel which
a. bends the elbows just a touch, and
b. really snugs you into that seat!

Enjoy - the principal benefit is "light hands" so when you are belted in, relax your grip a little....

Cheers,

Charlie

Are they a NAM member by chance? I'd like to know more about this harness bar.

No, he's not a NAM member. Whats to know, you pull the seat bottoms out, drill some holes, bolt in the bar. connect seatbelts. Oh yeah there is the whole mounting of the crotch and side belts thing too too.

It's basically 1/2 a roll bar. The idea behind the product is you can bolt it in Friday night, do a track day and set the car back to carpool with 3 others on Monday. Bery krause makes some great stuff but I feel they missed the ball on this one. Who is gonna pop that in and out. Don't forget to fill the holes with something to keep rain out. Might at well pull the back seat and get a roll bar with a harness bar if you are gonna go that far. That's my thought on the matter anyway.

I have the stable energies harness bar. Simply running the harnesses through the headrests does not work for everyone, as a few have stated. I find the harness bar takes a lot of downward pressure off my shoulders (since it pivots over the bar and not the backrest of my seat, which is lower than my shoulders), and that I really don't want to be pushing my butt around in a wheelchair should I take a collission with an improper harness setup doing more bad than a stock seat belt. Unless your autocrossing, for your own sake invest in a harness bar. Looks cool too
Plus the bar bolts into the upper seatbelt mounts, keeping the stock belts functional as well

This makes more sense than the Bery Krause unit. I've seen both in cars. With the Stable Energies the back seat is still liveable with ease, once the bar is out of course. You do end up with funky looking B pillars tho, but hey, your not sitting back there.

There was a company called Topspin, which made carbon fiber harness guides for use with stock seats - so you didn't have to feed harness through headrest. Here's a +4 year old picture of Maxmini's interior when he had this setup.

Dr.Steve (Custom Mini Shop) is finishing up my Autopower 1/2 cage install + G-Force 5-point harness(s). I evaluated going the Brey-Krause route, the B-pillar option & ultimately decided the 1/2 cage was the best route to take.

So what is the benefit of these over running the harness thru the headrest posts?

For some, the Schroth can pinch your neck. But with the shoulder pads, it is less of an issue for me.
