Stupid defrost question

So is there anyway to have the defrost on in my 04 MCS without having it blast on high? My car has the auto climate control which I dont really care for, but when I push the defrost button it automatically turns the fan on high. If I try to slow the fan down it turns the defrost off. It does the same thing when the auto climate is on, or if I am manually adjusting things. Am I a retard?

This is tricky and subtle. You can get air to come out of the defrost vents at a manually controlled fan speed by pushing and holding the upper vent button for about 3 seconds. This will close the main dash vents and send air up to the windshield (just like defrost mode) but without changing your fan speed setting. You can't just pushit quickly, the trick is to hold it down until the LED comes on. I have no idea why MINI made this simple operation so unintuitive.

Indeed, push and hold. Is that even in the owner's manual? I only figured this trick a few years ago, the full blast defroster used to annoy me.

Great post... I just had to deal with this for the first time this week. I thought I was gonna get blown away when my defrost came on.

So the upper vent button... thats the one right below the fan button, right?

Yup, it's this one:

...I have to supply my fans with more art

Edit: it's actually better to run the defrost with outside air, not recirculated.
(save a copy of this picture before I change it soon to reflect that. It's rare, erred art)

I think my buttons are different. I think that button looks like the middle one with an arrow pointing straight up.... weird.

Huh? I looked off of an actual picture of my car's aircon controls to draw this, it cannot be that inacurate.

Yes, the '05 and '06 has that button labeled with an up arrow (no indication that it is defrost). I have always turned the fan on and then selected the up arrow to defrost on our MINIs. No need to hold the button down in the '05 and '06, just push the up arrow once to select it. I did enjoy the artistic work in your drawing, though!

I was thinking that same thing when I looked at your drawing before I scrolled down.
