Let Me Be Stupid

There is a BBS factory near by my home...here in Heidelberg Germany. Actually its on the Autobahn going towards France. ( I googled it, its the HQ)
WHY in the HELL are these wheels so expensive? What am I missing? Heck they cost more than 24 or 26 inch chromes, not that thats a cool thing. I ask because I cannot believe ANYONE would put 800 dollar wheels on their car.....thats each piece!!!!

From their standpoint; why make a little money when you can make a lot of money.

A lot of the MINI Options (and a great many other products)
seem to be priced at the maximum point buyers will pay and have no relation with cost to produce.

Besides, 800 bucks a wheel isn't crazy.... 2400 per wheel is crazy.

Buy a set of JCW wheels and they're 3800 for a set.

Personally, I wouldn't spend that much for a set of wheels... at least not for my mini. If I had a ferrari or something, maybe....

800 price tag is reserved for their forged wheel, which are exceptionally strong and light.

most wheels are cast, which isn't as strong, thus heavier.

Yup...the forged BBS wheels are expensive. The OEM 19" forged wheels on my M3 cost about $650 each to replace.

I saw a BBS presentation on the forging process at Gateway Tech a few years ago. It was very impressive.

The BBW NA headquarters are in Braselton, GA, right next door to Road Atlanta.

I'm sure some would ask a similar question, wondering why you would buy a Mini instead of a Yaris when the Yaris is MUCH cheaper, similar size, similar mileage, etc. To people who want an "appliance" like a Yaris, it makes no sense. To people who see the value in the Mini's character, performance, quality, etc, it's a silly question.

In the same way, companies like BBS, HRE, CCW, Volk, etc, build high quality, high performance wheels for people who value certain qualities and are willing and able to pay for them. From a pure transportation functionality standpoint, they don't make financial sense, but few things do.

But if you care about quality, performance, looks, exclusivity, etc, when it comes to your car, why not when it comes to your wheels?

Well put I wonder if theres a BBS wholesale factory... I love the wheels they make, If I spent that much on wheels for my MINI I would be just like those who buy those damn spinin rims in 24 in size. Its never good to have wheels worth more than half the price of your car. BBS is terrific on a M5 or Porsche.

Yeah, it can be hard to justify the cost of the wheels if it's a significant percentage of your vehicle's cost, but then again, nice wheels can really "make" the car. Just depends on one's perspective as well as goals with the car.

For someone who is serious about racing for instance, they may spend a lot of money on wheels to lower the rotational inertia and unsprung weight. In a few years, if I'm open-tracking my '93 Mustang often, I may spring for some CCW's or BBS's for the performance aspect, and the Mustang started out as a $500 car.

Some people have financial sense and others dont. Some people actually use that sense to make decisions. But of course most people dont, most are deeply in debt, most are driving cars they cant afford and have thier wheels financed on a credit card

There are plenty of narcisistic, self indulgent and pretentious people who buy labels and brands instead of products. For them hubris and exclusivity can be bought on a shelf. They are willing to pay any price to have something you don't.

All good points. I paid 500 dollars for my Brand new tires and sligtly used wheels, I guess if you can get a deal on a name brand that just makes the deal SO MUCH SWEETER. The wheels only way 16 lbs.

I had a budget for the car and decided to spend on wheels and suspension instead of a sunroof, lounge leather, and nav. I haven't once wished I'd ordered differently. My MSRP was $24,350.
