Driver/Passanger Doors.... are they suppose to close hard?

I just picked up my MINI on Saturday.. and I LOVE her!! The only thing I question is how hard I need to close the doors for them to close. It may just be the nature of a MINI...? I am comparing it to my last few cars (toyota and Mazda) where a light push of the door closes it. With my Mini, closing it the same way.. doesn't actually close it. I need to reopen and 'slam' it a little harder than I am use to.

Dealer too far away to double check if ALL MINIs are like this, and I can't recall!

Is this normal?

Light push for mine. Certainly less than most other rides.

Something to Test

I haven't received my MINI yet, but you might try this. My Toyota Tacoma has doors that must be slammed to close completely, but only when the windows are up all the way. What causes the difficult closing is a good thing: the Tacoma is airtight.

Try closing the doors with windows all the way up versus one open an inch or so. If they're easier to close the latter way, I'd say you have a nice tight ride!

I noticed the same thing in my Mini. My kids have gotten in the habit of giving the door a good slam to close it, one morning on at the school bus stop, I had the passenger window down, and my daughter gave the door her normal swing shut. then SLAM!! She looked back at me and said sorry....

I agree with you.

Havent you notice, that when you open the door the window slides down a bit and when you close it the window slides back up.

I dont see any major need to slam my doors closed.Seems very easy to me

yes.. they go down automatically and once close, they automatically close. Maybe my old Toyota just closed super easy... ??

I've noticed the same thing. The doors on my husband's SUV close much more softly than the doors on the MINI. If I used the same amount of force on both cars, the MINI doors wouldn't shut.

Just work with it until you find the exact amount of force necessary to shut the door, eventually you'll find the spot.

Mine close softly but firmly. Nice click, never have to repull.

I came from a Toyota Tundra, so you can imagine how easy it is to close the MINI's doors now.

Make sure the seatbelt isn't getting in your way. I have nice dents in both of my doors from the stupidly designed lack of seatbelt holders (you know how they fall just perfectly next to the seat where they get jammed between the seat and the door...).

Anyway... Lewis' doors seem to be harder to close now than when he was brand new (1 year and 17k later). I was planning to have my favorite MINI technician take a look when he went it for his first service later this month. It may just be hinges that need adjusting a little, most coupes suffer from saggy doors to some extent.

There should be sliders on your seatbelts (all four) located between buckle and floor.

These are intended to be slid up the belt to the buckle when fastened and then when unlatched,
they keep the buckle out of the way of the door jamb and easier to fasten for next trip.

MINI Doors are very heavy for their size (no doubt 'armored' for side crashes) and are far too easy to slam for me,
this increases chance of damage when something is in the way and/or can loosen the interior structure and window motors etc..

I always tell people when they get in my car to not slam the doors....and to pull twice to open them.....and to be gentle with the vents. Maybe I should post the checklist on the dash...

Yeah, they're all tucked away now, just took a few good slams to find them. Suppose I could have shared. But they still find their way down when passengers (and I do let people drive him once in a while) and other drivers don't figure out the whole seatbelt minder game and move them or don't knotice that they fall/slip down.
