If so, I would very much like to know how it operates (interior design) so that I can replicate one. Anyone else interested?

Pretty sure Randy uses one and I was planning on it so I'm interested.

Sounds like a good idea to me, I was planning on putting it on x-mas list. I'm curious what happens if you forget to empty it ?

It should take a while to fill up, cause afterall it is your engine oil.
Its a fine mist of oil if anything that will be sucked back into the intake then combusted again. So if it fills up that means you are losing oil which isn't good.

This is my specualtion, but I did do this on my Acura GSR and no problems for 4 years. Not quite a catch can, but a mini KN air filter on crankcase nip

I do have one, and I just sold my last red one, but I'll check on supply for the stcok order on Monday.

It doesn't fill up quickly at all, as you are removing crankcase vent oil from the supercharger/intercooler loop. As someone said above, it's a fine mist of oil, not an oil line.

I think it is a good idea for longevity of the supercharger and it does help performance slightly because of the oil removed from the intercooler loop which displaces additional airflow.

It is not a wonder piece, but it is well built and functions as advertised. It costs about $120. If you haven't done the intake or a swaybar I would really suggest you do those mods before you spend monet on a catch can.

Hope that helps!

Randy

!!!BEWARE!!!
I attempted to install the catch can over last weekend and IT DID NOT FIT!
I contacted Alta and they said that it does not fit some 2003 models. They moved the grounding bolt too close to the motor mount so it wont fit. Adam, at Alta, told me that there are some other locations it can be mounted and their tech department is developing a hardware kit to relocate it to a different place in the engine bay that they will send to catch can buyers with these specific cars. The tech dept. was supposed to send me an email, but never did. Adam mentioned that depending on if the 2003+ models have ASC or DSC makes a difference in fitment, or new location, but that is all the info I have. What a pain.

If you are concerned about fitment of these kits on your car, before ordering, I suggest you give Adam or Alta's tech department a call first to make sure you won't have to find out the hard way that it won't fit.

(Side note: I don't even want my catch can anymore. It is a black kit with black hoses and black catch can. If Alta won't take it back I will sell it at retail with free shipping to whoever doesn't want to wait on a backorder list forever like I did with my intake. PM me if interested.)

Hi Randy. Can you explain how this unit works internally. I thought if it were simple enough, I'd make my own.

Thanks

Andy,

are you using one of these? How did you mount it? I assume that it is not MINI specific.

Thanks

Andy, did you do the "dog's bollocks" your self? Or does Helix offer the decal in silver like yours?

So, has anyone installed this Summit tank? Did you use a return line, or terminate at the tank?

I'm not using one myself, it is a generic piece. A friend uses one on his Auto-X VW Rabbit with great success. He had an oiling problem in his engine that filled the can with oil at one event! Better a full can than oil on the track.

Helix slapped it on my car without my knowledge.

It looks like you could take off the filter on top, and in its place run a line back to the stock inlet location just upstream from the throttle body.

Do you have to recirculate, or could it terminate without detrimental effects? Benefits either way?

That's a good question. Auto manufacturers tend to recirculate to reduce emissions and to keep the engine compartment clean. There are no touching, moving parts in the supercharger that see intake air, so the oil definitely isn't needed there. Engines seem to work just fine without having a mist of crankcase oil sprayed into their throttle bodies or intake manifolds. I can't think of any downside to external venting other than emissions and potential messiness.

I have the alta on my car. HEre is some info. For certain cars, IT DOES NOT FIT. I know this as my car was one of the cars that it does not fit on. But... Here is what does work... and Alta, If you want, you can call me about this. I made a small bracket, and put an extra bolt in, and it fit with not much hassle. The piece can be made for about 2 dollars.

The catch can does in fact catch, More that I though. For people looking to get others, Be careful as the place it goes is very space limited. and a larger one may infact not fit.

Thanks

What kept the Alta can from fitting in your car?

I saw one at the Boston pulley party. I was very surprised to see it more than 1/2 full of sludge!

MINI moved the Grounding bolt back about 1.5" from where it needs to be. It should be about 1.5"-2" behind the hood latch on the passenger side of the car. Mine was about 3" back.

Thanks

If I install a catch can, this may be a good place to put it (next to the ABS controller in the passenger side cowl):

I dont think its legal to not recirculate it. The catchcan doesnt "catch" everything because some of it is just blowby gas and there's nothing to trap vapor in the catchcan. All this pollution will come out the breather and into the atmosphere.
