IP Address

With all the talk of "IP Address" on another thread, I thought it might be a good topic of discussion. First i'll post this quote:

"Web site owners may also track the IP addresses of messages posted on the Web site's message boards or chats conducted through online chat services, and are likely to check the address if the post or chat is suspicious in nature. For example, if a visitor posts a message on a customer support message board asking if any other customers have had a particular problem with the company's product, the site owner might be inclined to check the poster's IP address."

This was from a Legal website. Now I would hope that NAM would have the intregity to keep this information to themselfs, but I have seen discussions on here and other websites that seem to differ. Whats your opininion on this?

It's basically just there so that they can ban you by your IP if they so choose. If I wanted my IP to stay unknown, I'd use a proxy.

I understand that, but what if they, being NAM gave out IP info. to other people?

I just want to make sure everyone realizes the request in that other thread for the IP address of individuals noticing issues on NAM was not mandatory. They were used only to help troubleshoot the issue.

I've also requested the Internet Brands Privacy Policy be posted.

NAM does track IP addresses and uses that information as an aid in determining site violations. It's also used to determine the a members origin, certain ranges from certain countries are filtered with admin approval required before posting. This is mainly from areas spam originates from.

That would be illegal and pretty much useless since most IP addresses change frequently.

Like I posted before in the other thread. If you use Dial-up for your internet connection your IP will usually change everytime you connect to the internet.

If you have broadband like Comcast, Verizon, etc. your IP address is usually the same until they pool their IP's or reboot their server. You can also buy a static IP through ISP's which will always be your IP address.

If you do not connect to the internet with a specific computer then you do not need an IP address, unless you have multiple computers at home on your own network.

Simply put IP addresses are like house address and identify every computer that is connected to another through a network.

This is such a non-issue. If your IP is dynamic than it changes, or you can change it yourself at will. If it is static then half the Eastern Europe already knows about it and are trying to break in. And there is nothing illegal about giving out an IP address.

Internet Brands Privacy Policy can be found as a link at the very bottom of this site http://internetbrands.com/ib

Keep in mind IB has many sites and some of the items discussed do not pertain to NAM.
