FIAT! That's right.
This mentioned in Autoblog: http://uk.reuters.com/article/govern...43558820080708

The third generation new Mini could be based on a FIAT platform. Well they tried Mercedes, the Peugeot, why not FIAT? Sort of keeping it in the EU community...

When I was a kid in Australia FIAT used to stand for Fix It Again, Tony. Oh well, it's just a rumor.

Maybe it will be based on the new 500. That could be cool.

It still does.

Man I sure hope this rumor doesn't come to fruition. Maybe this is MINI's way of pumping up R56 sales. Better get a MINI before it becomes a Fiat.

The new 500 is quite a bit smaller on the outside than a MINI. Plus, it already shares a platform with the upcoming Ford Ka. My guess is the platform would be shared with the Fiat Punto.

The other part of the news (I think this is more conjecture really) is that Alfa Romeos will be sold through MINI dealers. If BMW, MINI, and Alfa Romeo are sold at the same dealer, I could probably have one stop for all my automotive needs for the rest of my life.

I liked the FIATs (on FIAT, one Lancia) I had before I moved to the US, I don't see this as a bad thing.

I always heard that FIAT stood for Feeble Italian Attempt at Technology. Now ask me what Hyundai and Oldsmobile stand for! :p

The part of the article that really interests me is the possibility of Alfa's being offered in the states again. Alfa's are the zenith to me.

from what I can see the mini is a conglomerate of parts from different makers since BMW took it over. first gen engine is of the chrysler neon engine, the new one is renault. pleather seats are from UK tlower section, US upper section. seems everyones got there hands in the mix.

That's typical of the car industry these days. Lots of inter company links.
