Ever seen stripes AROUND the bonnet?

Hallo All,

The other week, I noticed my neighbor had an older GTO with stripes. Nothing strange there, but these stripes were AROUND the bonnet. So, they went, sort of in front of the tires, then went around the bonnet. So the look was like any normal stripe I've seen but 90 degrees "off" of what I'd consider normal.

I've not gotten my R55 yet, but it will not have stripes from the factory, but I may add some.

What do you think of this odd stripe? Have you seen it before? If I can, I will try to photoshop up a picture of a PW Clubman (like mine) with the stripes as I saw it on the GTO.

Cheers!

Did you like that bizarre striping? It sounds, for the lack of any word, gross.
90 degrees off? What would the point be?

Here's an example of stripes 'round the bonnet

Hi,

I've seen a few MINI photos of older models that have a slightly similar concept. I believe my neighbor's car (not a MINI) has side stripes that end in a stripe that crosses the bonnet. The photos are not very good. But below is a non-MINI example.

Now, the center stripe is to wide for my taste, but the nub of my discussion is how would something like this look on a Clubman? You might want it to be more in the middle of the bonnet, so you could come up the wheel wells a bit, and then start the across-the-bonnet stripe.

So, as just a point of discussion. If you look at tons of old MINI photos, you'll see a few like this. Some are just "stripes across the bonnet" and some have side stripes to connect the bonnet stripe.

Of course, I'm offended in having to show an inferior, non-MINI, but it's the best pic I could find. I cut as much out of the image as I could.

Cheers!

Here's a classic MINI with lateral stipes on the bonnet

Hi Again.

Well, I don't disagree. I was wondering if anyone had seen something like that on a MINI. I'm probably not getting any!

But below is historic proof that MINIs of old could have had this type of stripe. The color picture below is a 1975 MINI GTS from motorbase.com. To be sure that the stripe shown wasn't some recent bad idea applied to a classic car, I found the black and white promotional photo below from Austin Rover Online. It does seem that in 1975 one could get stripes placed laterally along the bonnet, then connecting to stripes on the sides. (BTW, I know that's a photo from 1975...I had the same hair then as that guy in the car! )

Granted, our current bonnets seem to have a design that is more conducive to longitudinal stripes. The noses on the attached pictures are more square and flat, so the lateral stripe is easier to understand.

Who knows if these MINI GTSs sold many like this, but at least you gotta love all that chrome! You probably didn't have to ask if it was real chrome or plastic, either!

Cheers

P.S. Another way you can tell that's a real promotional photo is how would the guy have gotten his car into his apartment? Notice the stereo, the plants, and the photos!

That's no apartment, that's the Museum of Modern Art! (Notice Guernica hanging on the wall in the background.)

That sort of thing was pretty common back then. Back in those days, Mopar products sometimes had a similar design going across the trunk (which is what Chrysler called the boot) instead the bonnet like that one. That version is often called a "hockey stick stripe", which may or may not be the appropriate term for the same sort of thing as on those Minis.

Makes me think of Adam Ant and his 80's makeup with a stripe across his nose.

Yeah. I'm old.
