Indirect TPMS?

Ok, I've read about a dozen different threads about the tire pressure monitor system.

I have an '05 MCS and I'm waiting on the arrival of some Rota Slipstreams. It is my understanding that I may have the Indirect system and so will not need to swap sensors into the new wheels. Is this correct?

Is there any thread that spells this out nicely? Which model years have indirect and which have direct? Is there anything I need to worry about when swapping wheels?

With an '05 build, you have the "indirect system" so you needn't worry about "swapping sensors." Your system uses the ABS which monitors relative wheel spin.

I believe the change to the "direct" system occcurred in 2007.

As far as tire pressure monitoring goes, there is nothing else you need to worry about, except to reset your MINI after you swap the wheels. Read the owner's manual on how to reset the system (involves simply pressing a button).

The sensors didn't come in until Sept. 2007. So, even some R56 have the indirect system. It is nice not to have to hassle with sensors.

Thanks for the info, this confirms what I had thought!

Yeah, I'm glad I don't have to mess with changing the sensors.

to jump in on this thread. if i have a 06 MCS with a 9/05 build date do i need to worry about the sensors when buying a new set of wheels? i do not want any lights on my dash when i get rid of my s-lites. all i would need to do is swap the wheels and push a button on the dash? why do i keep hearing that TPMS for r53 are around $200. I always thought you needed to get a new set when you get a new set of wheels. thanks!

The easiest way to tell if you have the direct system of TPMS is to look at the valve stems. If it has rubber valve stems... Indirect. If the stems are metal, then they are the direct TPMS. Late 07 and all 08 MINIs have direct TPMS
