Another MP3 Hookup Question

Just got into work here so not much time to play with the car (got her last night!)

I bought a brand new Zune and tried using the my Zune's Piece to USB (Zune/USB) cable and selected 'USB' on the base radio system. It says LOAD for a brief moment then returns to what ever it's doing. I don't have the AUX cable yet.

So question is: How can I play my Zune in my car using the USB feature? Or does it come down to the AUX input?

The USB option is for anything that will look like a disk drive or USB thumb drive to the cars computer system.

If you Zune can be set up to be read by a computer as a disk drive that is how you would have to set it up. If it can not then you must use the AUX input.

I have never played with a Zune before so i am not sure if it can be used in as a "disk drive" type device. Check you manual.

Schatzy, did you confirm if a drive needs to be FAT formatted also? I can't remember who did all the testing recently....

Yes Sort of, Fat seems to work but the actual requirement is FAT32. The problem there is that formating it with Windows does not always work. It really needs to be formatted with a formating program, just can't think of the one i used. Will see if i can find it though.

Nice document but it is for the older version of interface the newest interface that is going into the 08's is the 6FL package which is upgraded from the 6ND and 6NE packages. I believe these packages were used in the majority of 07 vehicles. The 6FL package started being used in early 07 BMW's but was introduced to the Mini for 08's.

The 6FL package is the one that is stated in the latest tech service manuals and although much is the same if specifies FAT32 rather than FAT. (although FAT still seems to work). It also allows for a larger set of data to be loaded into the interface it self. The 6ND and 6NE form what i have read will only allows for up to 12,000 to 15,000 data items (not tracks but mp3 tags) but the new 6FL allows up to 20,000 data items.

See this post for more details on the use of USB drives with the latest 6FL interface.

The Zune currently cannot be seen as a USB device without a registry hack in Windows - that said it won't work via the MINI's USB port. You'll have to use the AUX input.

(I have one BTW and have tried as well)

well since I have to use the AUX input then no worries. My buddy sent me a link for a retractable cable - good prices too. Better than Radioshack but slower because of ordering.. Monoprice
