Stock add-on cupholder, Mini-Fini?

I have the Mini-Fin cupholder and notice that it swings to easily, its hard to keep it still. Also looks like this movement and how its attached has let cups in it to rub the finish off on part of the silver uprights on the console. Is the factory cupholder more locked down, or does it swing to easily as well?

Hmmm, I have two Mini-fini cupholders installed, and neither swing easily. They do swing, but only when moved by me. I wonder if yours is defective?

Does yours "click" when moved? You should hear (and feel) clicks when you swing the cupholder to a new position.

It clicks but only on about 2/3 of the swing, and their not really tight clicks. I like the looks of the stock one, and I'm wondering if its a more sturdy piece or not.

Well, the OEM piece is sturdy. But I pulled mine off as I thought it was too big. But the major problem I had was that (in my opinion) it didn't do a good job holding cups/mugs in place. When taking a hard corner in more than one instance the mug would tip .

It sounds like your Mini fini may be defective (broke?).

I much prefer the MiniFini cup holder over the stock - much more sturdy and steady. If yours swings to much at the hinge, pop out the holder at the hinge, put a piece of electrical tape or a piece of paper around the plastic piece that goes into the hinge (you'll have to experiment with the thickness), and reinsert the cup holder. It should be tighter now.

Thanks for your thoughts on the differences, I'll pull it apart and give your idea a try. Or at least see what can be done to tighten it up...

The MINI-FINI style was OEM until 05. I took mine from my 04 and put it in my 06 because the later cupholders are awful. It should not swing. As was stated above, it should click and only move when you move it. Take it off and see if there is anything you can tighten up or try the mentioned tape trick.

lordgrinz,
Also see if the main mount is istalled right side up. I remember seeing that there is a recess on one side that is supposed to face down to the floor.
The main mount is in my 04 but no cup holder so I just ordered 2 new ones.

As stated above, the MiniFini's were OEM until '05 when they were replaced by the factory (or another supplier). The Mini Fini's seem superior since they have a more positive ratchet. If the ratchet is no longer holding the cup steady, the teeth have worn out and you need a new one.

I prefer the MiniFini cup holder over the stock. I had it on my 05 and took it off to put on my 06. Actually I have 2 for long trips with the GF. I think the MiniFini holds a bigger bottle. I also like the fact that it is adjustable on the column.
