New or Used... the eternal question.

Is it bad that I'm looking at used MINIs because I want it through the break in period already?

Now yes, I may not be able to get everything I want (unless anyone knows if there's some way to add packages after the fact ), but at least I'll be able to immediately get some spirited motoring in, right?

Or am I going horribly awry and need to force myself to go through the pain of ordering, waiting, and then babying the MINI through the break in period, just to complete the experience?

Lead me to the truth, oh great motorers!

Is break-in that painful??? I like knowing the car has been ordered to my specs and has been broken in properly. I'd say...go new!!!

Retained value being what it is, and unless you want features offered only on prior models, then I'd say go new. There's always a chance the dealer will have what you want in stock, but ordering one lets you get on the 1st Gear board & join one of the XX-weeks support groups.

A year ago, I'd first thought used, did a test drive, then for the hell of it test drove a new one. Decided on new as it wasn't priced that much more than what the dealer was selling couple-of-year-old models for.

Got mine off the floor so my wait was only a couple of days while the dealer put the checkerboard graphics on the sunroof and mirrors. I'd told my MA I wasn't keen on a sunroof, didn't like the way the dark glass stuck out against the white roof. so he offered the graphics gratis. This sealed the deal. It has premium and cold weather packages and rear spoiler. Tis an auto tranny but I immediately started playing with the paddles to manually shift around turns, downshift coming to a red light, etc.

Break-in wasn't bad. I don't think I transgressed any of the guidelines.

Guess this calls for another trip to the dealer... even though they have maybe 10 MINIs on the lot total. People have been buying them up left and right

I was looking at used ones. Had my eye on a LIB 2005 with 33k miles on her. After tax and all the fees would of been over $16.5 K .
Convinced myself and wife for $3k more I could buy a new one , better gas mileage ( 6 speed ) . With the full warranty. lol.

I really like my new one and the breakin period is no big deal !

Buy a new one and follow it across the big pond !

I nearly broke myself during the break in. For me It was excruciating having the German AUTOBAHN available. I had to give it to my wife to break it in. The break in period for me was like breaking a bad addiction, I almost always relapsed and hit that GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR. Driving my MINI S is my Drug. Needless to say, the car was driven 900 Miles medium softly. I gave into the speed of the German Autobahn. The car runs right and youll never know the difference.
To answer your question, You should however buy new I think simply because a used one is only what like 1-2 grand less?
