V1 failed to save my ****?

Not sure if its entirely V1's fault.

Heading South on the Express Lanes on the Garden State Parkway just past Homdel, I got pulled over for doing 105mph in a 65mph limit in my Mini, as per the NJ Trooper.

I wasn't the only person on the road, but here's how it went.

I was behind another car doing 70mph, that person decides to speed up and change over to the right lane in front of a chain of 3 cars and then I speed up to pass him and changed over to the right lane in front of him, and as I changed lanes, I passed the NJ Trooper parked in the left shoulder.

NO ALERT ON MY V1.

Not even prior to passing the Trooper.

Not even as the Trooper was pulling me over.

So it begs the questions:

Did my V1 failed to save my ****?

Did the Trooper use a "Speed Measurement Device", as indicated on the ticket?

BTW, when I inquired the Trooper what radar he used, he ignored me and walked back to his car to write me the ticket.

Anyone know how long it would take my Mini to accelerate from 70mph to 105mph?

I don't believe I was doing 105mph as the Trooper said I was doing.

If you want to pursue this, you can request discovery from the State Trooper including all his notes and all information about the method/equipment (including calibration documents and his certificate of proficiency for that specific equipment) that was used to calculate your speed. Keep copies of everything. You are entitled to see all the information and evidence against you.

If you don't receive this discovery before your court date, you can ask the judge to throw out all this evidence. Either the charge will be thrown out or the judge might reschedule after you receive the discovery.

If you just show up at court, the prosecutor will typically offer you a lesser offense (with fewer points) if you plead guilty.

Another option is to get a lawyer who specializes in traffic cases (pay him $200-$300) and he might be able to negotiate the violation down to a no-points ticket while you still pay a fine.

Your best choice depends on how much energy you want to put into this, how far you'll travel for court, and how many points you have on your license. Good luck.

Good luck, but if you find out that you were accurately clocked at 105 mph, I suggest hiring a local lawyer. I got a nasty ticket for doing 43 over last year, unfortunately it was completely my fault. It was definitely worth it for me investing a little $$$ on a good lawyer and getting my violation brought down to basically nothing, with a small fine, and court costs.

Be glad you're not in Ca. That kind of speeding gets you handcuffs.

Does the V1 come with a guarantee to pay your speeding tickets?

It's a radar/laser detector not a cop detector. That said somethings can effect your V1's performance.

Where was the V1 mounted?

Which version is it?

Did you adjust the factory programming?

Which "mode" where you running in?

How long has it been since you had a tune up and how long have you owned it?

Have you left the V1 in the car on hot days in the last few weeks/months?

That said, a short range well aimed LIDAR hit or use of a stopwatch, or pacing can be/are still undetectable by the V1.

Depending upon which gear you are in you can get an MCS up there in speed in a real hurry, and the wide wheel base can make it so you won't "feel" it. And consider yourself forewarned, there are judges out there that see speeding as speeding, period. So yes you may be able to get the level of it reduced I wouldn't go in expecting any favors, lawyer or not. If you want to play, you have to pay; after 20MPH over or as the case may be 35MPH over the "common speed" of traffic there is a large enough speed differential that most drivers are aware they are moving quickly.

Ummm doesn't sound like your V1 is faulty, sounds like your decision making is...

Passing 3 cars on the right @ 105 mph, on a public road, isn't the best idea. Be an adult and accept your punishment. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

I don't see where his post indicates he was passing on the right.

In CA, CHP are required to be able to visually estimate your speed within 5 or 3 mph (might have even been less). The only time I was in court I remember hearing this.

Maybe the Trooper did a visual assessment and didn't use radar. That wouldn't explain why a speed measurement device is indicated on the ticket though.

I don't see why it was needed to accelerate once the other car moved over. Were there cars lined up behind you? Why the rush to get by the guy once he moved out of your way?

Why buy a 500 hp Corvette ZO6 when the standard version already has 405? You know, it's a guy thing. We've all done stupid things before that have no good explanation. Live and (hopefully) learn.

Yeah, I'd do discovery on this... if the V1 didn't go off, it's highly unlikely that you got hit with radar. LIDAR, that's entirely possible. VASCAR, V1 can't protect against (why I always slow down for overpasses). Very possible that he estimated your speed and falsified that on the ticket - because estimated speed tix are less likely to yield him a conviction... but he just KNOWS you were FLYING... so he socked it to you... I'm not claiming that all LEOs are cheats and liars - I'm related to some who aren't... but I know that some are... make him prove how he clocked you. Then get a lawyer.

Down here, that ticket will get you a license suspension.

It is all about fund raising.

I sat in the East Rutherford court for a couple of nights to beat down a tic.

There is a no point violation you can plead to for $435

I lost count of the $435, $435 all night

It was put in to close a 90 million dollar budget gap when McGreevy was the gov

Another one they give you instead of a moving violation is a license plate frame $45 no points

Drive down Rt 17 in Paramus at 8:00 and everyone is doing 70-75

Try that @ 10:00 PM you will see red lights flashing in you rear view

Be careful out there

No printed name on the ticket.

Just his signature and ID No. 6234.

Correct. No where in my original post did I say I passed on the right.

"Pass Left, Keep Right"
I notice that 99.9% of drivers don't even know that rule exist even with the sign posted every couple of miles.

You got a ticket for 40 over the limit and didn't get a suspended license and jail time? Interesting.

Just for future refrence. The police generally look for those leading a pack of cars. If your in front its assumed you are the one speeding the others are simply following the flow of traffic. 9out of 10 Times who ever is leading will be the one the cop radars and pulls over. I have seen it happen 3 times in the last week in fact on 295 heading south bound. The car leading the pack of cars I was following was pulled over. Just something to keep in mind.

I was thinking that too.

Just very surprised when the Trooper only handed back my license and registration and of course the ticket.

Makes me wonder what was he thinking when he wrote 105mph in a 65mph zone.

Agreed, but I wasn't leading the "pack".

Who knows what would have happened if I just stayed in the left lane instead of keeping to the right.
