I mean, it almost seems like you have to slam it and I HATE doing that. Has anyone else noticed this? The dealer also shut the door once and it didn't shut all the way and he had to add some force. But he didn't say anything about it - should have asked!!! But I was too excited. So, anyone else out there? Other than that, my only complaint is that I've seemed to develop a need to wash bugs off my car immediately - so I'm washing it at all hours. Think I need to just get the clear-bra

Yes, I noticed that some of the doors closed better than others at the dealer. I have a 98 Volvo and the doors shut great without any force. I had a 68 Mercedes and they also would close tight with the push of a finger. My MCS doors close like American cars not as nice as I'd like.

zwoman,

I've had the same experience since I picked up my MINI a week ago. Part of it is that it's my new baby, and I don't want to touch it with anything more abrasive than a diaper! I think that's part of it, just needing to really relax and enjoy the car. I actually like the firm, solid feel of the car, even when you give the door a solid (but not TOO solid!) slam shut. So relax and have FUN. So far, in less than one week I accidentally shot way over 4500 rpm , had my coffee mug fly out of the cupholder and spill coffee on my beige leather seats , and accidentally didn't close the sunroof all the way, only to have it rain inside and soak the carpet floormats! I'm a klutz, I admit it, but oh well, it's a great car and I just enjoy zipping around in it!

Yes I have found that to be a problem with both doors being harder to close that I would expect. Part of the problem with the passenger door, I found, was that people were trying to get in, and I kept trying to close the door. With the drivers door, I had a similar problem, I kept getting out of the car and trying to close the door, and then before it fully closed, I was trying to get right back in to drive again.
A squirt gun has helped immensely with the passenger door problem, and was much better than the little whip and chair I tried. The only thing that I have found that works with the driver's door problem is intense food and sleep deprivation, and when nature's call can't be put on hold any longer.

Really, I have found the doors hard to close. I find it helps if I leave the window open a little, or when I have opened the sunroof, at least a little. I think the car is air tight. I hadn't thought of this, but maybe I can coordinate inhaling with closing the door....

My wife is saying I'm neurotic. You are correct. The doors close MUCH easier with the window cracked open. The car is airtight.

You could always weld the doors shut and climb in through the windows - ala Dukes of Hazzard

Seriously, when I test drove the MINI, I noticed that the doors were heavy and took some effort to close. They are also fairly long for their size. I'm a litle concerned that over time that much weight that far from the hinges will cause the doors to sag.

Do the doors shut any better with the windows lowered? MY doors close with less effort if the windows are down, my 328is would lower the windows slighty when the doors were opened to prevent increased effort in shutting the doors (the windows were frameless). it would raise them when the door was shut (allowed a better seal).

The Cooper S does that!! So yeah, it's supposed to be airtight  I'm guessing that it's just because it's such a solid car...thanks for convincing me that I didn't get a defective baby...I would have loved him the same either way, but I'm glad to know the passenger door thing is normal

Oh, and the water gun...hehehehehe...that's funny.

Both my doors require a frim pull or push. You have to 'follow through' and not expext the momentum of the door to close it. I wonder if it may be that the hinges are still stiff as they are new. The trunk closes very easily.
