Buying a Cooper S

I found a mini, here are the details from the current owner.

"Basic:
2006 Mini Cooper S Dark Metallic Silver
1.6 Ltr Supercharged 170 Hp Front-Front
6-Speed Getrag Manual Transmission
4 Wheel ABS-CBC-EBD-DSC Disc Brakes
CBC (Cornering Brake Control)
EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution)
DSC (Dynamic Stability Control)
205/45-17R All-Season Run Flat Tires
28-34 MPG (effective. This is about what I get)
~12,600 miles
48 mo. warranty 36 mo. maintenance/roadside service free of charge
6 speaker radio/in-dash cd player with speed controlled volume (CD player also plays MP3 CDs)

Packages:
Premium Package
- Leather wrapped, multi-function steering wheel
- Dual pane sun-roof
- Auto-climate control
Sport Package
- Sport Seats
- Sport Suspension
- Sport Brakes
- Xenon Head lamps
- 17" All-Season tires
- Bonnet Stripes (Black)
- DSC
Cold Weather Package
- Heated front seats
- Heated mirrors
- Heated washer jets

Factory Options:
Universal Garage Opener
Front Fog Lamps
Chrono-package (Moves the Speedometer from the center to stearing + extra gauges Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, and Water Temp.)

Dealer Options:
Window Tint
Invisi-shield (Upper and Lower)
Rubber Floor Mats (Front, Back, and Boot)

Extra Info:
I have used nothing but Top Tier (Shell, Conoco-Phillips, etc.) Shell V-Power 91 Premium
Fully Synthetic Mobil1 10W-30 Motor Oil
It has been cleaned inside and out about every 2 weeks using ArmorAll Car products (Soap, Wheel Cleaner, Wheel/Tire Protector, ArmorAll protective Coating)
Inside dash etc. protected during cleaning process
Outside plastic/rubber protected during cleaning process
Liquid wax coating applied in-between waxing
Replaced front-driver-side tire
All tires are good for the next 1 year
All brakes good (currently at 7mm, replace at 3mm, started at 11mm)
Regular maintenance performed (just performed 1 year oil/filter change + tire rotation)"

Not sure what to think. I have seen the car in person but I think 22k might be a little steep. Let me know what you guys think.

dunno man except for no leather? (U didnt say), that's a pretty loaded S with fairly low miles, so I think $22K is a good starting point. Plus being here in CO supply and demand is still out of balance, and 05s and 06s are highly desired cars. It's been well maintained and there's still quite a bit of warranty left, so I say go for it, offer $20K, and this gives U a little room to move up, maybe to $21K. remember these cars only depreciate about 8%/year so U can use that as a guide too.

and the local MINI dealer's service is nothing short of awesome. Is Schomp the dealer that's selling it??

If U get it, dump the runflats and get some good conventional all-season performance tires. You will notice the difference.

I am crunching all the numbers and it looks good. The guy that is selling it is someone I used to work with here at IBM. I have been to schomp a few times checking out minis. Have you met Tyler the motoring advisor? hes a pretty cool dude. In fact I have never seen such a bunch of laid back car salesman.

Sounds very close to what my 05 was originally like. Mine had an MSRP of $27,420 with the following:

Limited Slip: $500
Panther Black Gravity Leather: $1,300
Chrome Line Interior: $200
Rear fog: $100

Total More: $2,100, so equivalent MSRP would be $25,320 plus whatever the cold weather package was.

These were early 2005 numbers, so I don't know how much these numbers increased for 2006. It at least gives you an idea of how much he paid for it new, which does not necessarily reflect current demand and value.

Needless to say, I LOVE my car and if I had to order one again back then knowing what I know now I would not change anything about it (3 years after purchase).

Good luck!

With the exception of the items above, and my having the upgrade sound system, my car ('06) is otherwise identical. I bought it in April of '07 from a dealer that had a ton of '07 cars on the lot and wanted rid of the '06. I paid $25K, out the door.

So, I would think, given how well the cars hold their value, that somewhere around $20K to $22K should be about right.

Best of luck.

Dean.

No, there's been so much turnover that my MA Vince Quick is the only one that was there when the d'ship first opened in 2002. Call Devin Scott or Robert Dieterle (the best SAs on the planet) and give them the VIN so they can verify the service record--and let U know if any other work was done to the car. from what U said, it sounds like a winner for $20-22K. good luck!

Are there any specific issues that one should be aware of?
I would be pretty upset to have paid 20k+ for a car that had engine or structural issues.

most issues have little to do with the tritec engine, which is a bulletproof little bugger that's holding up well over time. check my sig: w/my 2005 S it's been a defective flywheel/clutch/MSC, a steering rack that imploded, a cacaphony of interior rattles, some so loud they drown out conversation, sketchy body fit and finish, leaking motor mount, warped sunroof cassette, and window regulators that are total crap (A longtime BMW problem). $6,217 worth of warranty chargeback repairs over the last 3.5 years, with everything fixed RIGHT the FIRST time with NO arguments.

Not to mention the one day about a year ago I was driving home and my wipers came on for one cycle, then shut off. Both of my hands were on the wheel when that happened. ANY electrical issues and this car'd be gone in an instant.

that's why U should call RS with the VIN to get the service low-down on the one U want, and because U still have some time (when did the car first get put into service? U have 4 years from that date) and about 37K left on the OEM warranty dont sweat it. sounds like the prev owner babyed it. And Id rather pay 20K for a 2006 than several thou less for an 02 or 03, it's just a better and more refined car.

Looks fairly well loaded up. 22k is probably about average for a car with those miles in good condition. The R53's still haven't really dropped in price, they're a highly desired car.

Oh, and the R53 Cooper S had 168 BHP, not 170 .

surprising enough I have not test driven it yet however, I have test driven the new cooper s which is nothing short of amazing. I hope the R53 can hold up to that level of refinement.

You won't have either of those problems, plus you're still under the factory warranty AND maintenance plan. Sounds like a no brainer. Go write the check and enjoy.

So... I took it for a test drive this past weekend. I love it more than the R56 :D I'm scrambling to sell my current car and save enough for the first payment. The only thing that rests on my shoulders now is... what mods can I do that will increase MPG?

So, I tried to talk him down in price, even 500, and he wouldn't budge. I guess there really isn't anything else to negotiate. He does still have his free key reprogramming from when he got it, any suggestions for cool programmable options?

I just picked up my 06 MCS here in Utah about 2 weeks ago. Mine was pretty loaded like yours and I paid $21,750 so seems pretty good to me. remember like everyone else has said too the Mini holds its value in the market very well. Good Luck on it.

I just bought a '05 MCS electric Blue with those options with only 11k miles on it and got it for 18k in PA/MD area. Had to drive 2 hours to get it, but look at my pics, car is flawless and I paid 2k below blue book. In CO they are less eminent than they are here, but my sticker (again with the same options) was $23,780.00. I have Premium, cold weather and sport packages, rubber and carpet mats, stripes in the front and back and an extra $500.00 for the metallic blue paint. I say 22k at most or walk on the deal. Patience is a virtue. I took 2 months looking to find mine, took three to buy it, and got a great deal.

oh... Correction on the price: 21k is his asking price. Appearently he is taking a financial hit because he leased the car and owes a decent chunk of money to the dealer. Even better

Just picked up a 2005 MCS 6 speed, Chili Red with white top, 26,000 miles, premium, sport, cold, black panther leather interior, chrome line interior, new rubber mats, two brand new runflats up front (I know), purchased from a local Mini dealer here in NY and it's a Mini NEXT certified vehicle with 6 years 100k extended warranty. The car is almost as new, I paid $19,400. This is my third R53 since 2002. I can't quite wrap my head around the R56 though it's an improved car in some respects, I feel it lost some of it's 'mojo'.
