Smelled Gas

I accidentally posted this same thread in Gen1 MINIs...Hopefully the MOD will respond soon.

Anyways...when I went to start Winston up this morning I smelled the faint hint of Gas and leather

Anybody else smell gas when starting up? And I don't mean the human kind either

It hasn't been at start-up, but a few times since getting my MC a couple of weeks ago I've gotten a good whiff of gasoline when I first get out of the car after parking it. No evidence of a leak that I've noticed.

The Flying Squirrel (rest her soul) was spewing fuel vapor before she went back to Mini/BMW.
You could smell it especially strong right in front of the driver's side "S" by the bonnet seam. It would reek the worst for about 10 minutes after shut-down.

Wow...sot the The Flying Squirrel, may she RIP, was what year, and model? And did they ever figure out what was wrong. I started up Winston at lunch break and no gasoline smell... I'm looking for it tomorrow morning.

Did you have your MC checked out?

Not yet - if it continues I might, but it hasn't been frequent enough to concern me yet. Maybe three times in the last couple of weeks.

i have this problem on my 08 mcs. i first happened at about 1k. the gas smell was overpowering. dealer kept it several days replacing fuel pressure regulator after finding a leak..some gizmo mounted on the passenger side of the head on the engine.

fuel smell went away for a while but returned. they replaced a plastic hose that had gotten saturated w/ fuel during the first repair and the smell went away again. it's back again now though. it seems to originate from the area around the first part they replaced. it shows up when engine is hot and shutdown. you can smell fuel downwind of the car. ac fan picks it up for 30 seconds on hot startup. i cannot see any visible leaks anywhere, but it only takes a drop to make a hell of a smell.

i'm beginning to get a little tired of their inability to fix it. it's going back in next week.

My car would smell like gas after a drive and when I took it to the dealer for the SZL failure, I told them about it. They said that they have never heard of a fuel leak on a R56, but they would check it out. Turns out that my DI fuel pump was leaking on the low pressure side. They claimed that the high pressure side is capable of severing a hand if it has a pin hole leak. Sounds like the old stories of steam leaks on a ship.

Doesn't the dealer have a sniffer(technical term, ha) to find various leaks?

If that's not it, check to see if Lurch is in the back seat!
Sorry Lurch.

I've noticed a faint gas smell while driving or when parking the Mini, I've been wondering if there's an actual fuel leak, or if there's someone else with a problem that parks nearby in our parking garage.
