$800.00...? kinda sours me a little

I have been looking into the JCW rear spoiler. I can get it for $400, so thats not too bad i guess. I ve looked at all kinda of other spoilers and the JCW looks the best and most professional in my opinion. with tax its around 450. I know that a "DIY" kit is sold for this spoiler but I have seen one that was done before and i didnt care for it. to have it done correctly, the holes from the old spoiler need filled and the roof needs painted when doing the swap. I have the hook-up at a REALLY good body shop in my area and he said he hated giving me such a high price but the swap over is a real nightmare if i want it right. he said around 300-350 for installation, filling, and painting.
so that brings the JCW spoiler to around 800.00--I do really like it and i know not too many people have this but i was wondering If you guys would go for it? 800 is alot and i could do alot of things to the mini with it. I have been salivating over it for a long time. input?

People who don't care for the spoiler are going to say it's a waste of money, obviously you are struggling with the cost, but at the end of the day you need to ask yourself how badly do you want it? Regardless of what others think or say it's what you want. If your'e going to do it..... do it right. Sounds like you need to do this.....................Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Towne MINI in Buffalo quoted me 2.5hrs to do it, which would be $250 max for labor to install. Mini's directions, however, say it should take 1.5hrs. Of course the install kit is extra (I think $80).

As far repainting the roof is concerned, it is absolutely not needed. The directions from MINI do not call for it and neither did the write up MC2 did on the install. Also, the kit comes with small plastic fins that fill the holes left from the OEM spoiler, so filling holes is not part of the job either.

I have seen them done without going to a body shop. The plugs look ok Not 100% ok, but ok. And I haven't heard of any of them flying off with the tape, that stuff is STRONGGGG. I wouldn't sweat it getting it done at a body shop, just do it yourself . BTW, if I was to replace my spoiler that would be my first and only choice .

Sounds about right to have the holes filled and painted. I'd get a second body shop to quote it just to see. you could always use the plugs now and have it painted at a later date...

The JCW Spoiler for the R53 takes a lot longer than 2 hours to fit. I should know, I have one sitting in a box at home, and the OEM adhesive kit. To be honest about it, you'd be mad to let anyone try to fit this in 2 hours, the instructions recommend with the OEM Betalink Adhesive, to let the car sit, for 6 hours, with heat directed at the spoiler to cure the epoxy. They say it's then safe to drive, but they don't recommend high speeds for 24 hours.

To the OP, 800 Dollars sounds about right. I bought mine for 420 Euros with trade discount, and the epoxy kit for a further 50 Euro.

The reason why I suggest getting this done at the dealership is because of the following quote from MINI's instructions:

"The roof spoiler may only be bonded with the aid of the aforementioned original Betalink K2 components. Other adhesives, including those approved by BMW, do not achieve the necessary combined tension and shear resistance."

If you ever run into a problem you know you're covered. And I must correct my previous statement regarding the time required to install. The instructions state:

"Installation work will take approx. 1.25 hours (including dismantling the standard spoiler); this time may vary depending on the condition and equipment specification of the car."

Lastly, the instructions do not provide a part number for the plugs...check realoem.com.

The installation time may be 1.5 hours, but the car still needs to sit there for a total of 6 hours. I'm having mine done early next week.

Prices from accross the pond are not good for comparison. For example, you can easily find the JCW wing for under $500 USD, which is about 315 euro. I got lucky (right place, right time) and picked mine up for under $300 USD .

I did my own installation using the OEM adhesive kit and it was really pretty easy to do. It was summer and I live in the desert, so I let it sit outside for the rest of the day and there is no way that wing is coming off. The plugs that fill the holes were on a national back order, so unless they come with the kit, they are really hard to get.
