Ok, before I started actually *reading* the article, I flipped to the MINI and found that it did a 1/4 mile in 15.7 seconds. The STOCK MCS did it in 15.5??! What gives?

I too am realy confused why a car with a reported 245 hp would come up slower in the 1/4. Even considering track conditions, ambient temps, driver technique and such, it would seem something is missing. Someone enlighten me please.

 

There was a MASSIVE headwind coming down the drag straightaway for the 0-60 and 0-130mph tests. This effected all cars, as you can tell by looking at their numbers...well, other than some AWD mega hp beasts.

From what I understand, the MC is actually faster off the line and all the way up tp ~ 40mph. From there the MCS starts to use its HP advantage. This is probably due to the supercharger winding up and the fact that the MC is a bit toquier (sp) in the low - mid RPMs. I've got a pretty heavily tweaked MC and I blew the doors off a stock MCS atthe dragstrip last friday night.

Who says MCs don't go fast!

Superchargers do not need to wind up. They are driven directly by the engine. And not indirectly by exhaust gasess like turbos.

There's no way a stock MC could smoke a stock MCS. Remember, your's is a "pretty heavily tweaked MC".

C&D said since they were testing so many cars it was impossible to do multiple runs in opposite directions to get a telling 1/4, 0-60, etc time like they normally would. If you watch the MINI Madness video's that were posted you can hear the wind blowing, so I have no doubt it was windy.

I just read the article. I am very impressed by the MINI Madness Cooper S results.

The thing that caught my eye is the fact that the MINI was extremely fast by the end of the road course, as well as by 100mph. (look at the graph on page 58). Where the MINI lost out was 100mph-130mph acceleration. At this speed, aerodynamics become a much larger issue. Look at the GTI; it showed great results up to 100mph, but they could not even get it up to 130mph. MINI was the slowest to reach 1/4 mile, but the fastest by the end of the road course. Therefore, it must have been extremely fast through the road course.

Other points of interest: It took the winning RSX 7.5 seconds to reach 60mph.

And I really hate the tiny font size they used in this new format. My eyes are still hurting.

 

Which issue is it?

I just watched C&D tv and saw the whole thing.

Tom M is right. They said they couldnt do it in reverse, it was hot, windy, and they did no corrections to the numbers.

 

Just saw the TV version but my computer keeps crashing when I try to read the article. Grrr! Wish they spent more time on the overall drive quality of each car and tabled out how much each entry spent on upgrades.

 

Did you notice the car DID NOT have a strutbrace or a good intercooler

 

...and I havent seen anything on the website either, where is it.

 

all the mods are listed on Mini Madness' site. i thought the tv show sucked. they didn't tell us much at all. i guess they want us to buy the magazine.

 

there must be more on tape... maybe they'll release a special dvd.
