Anyone With Less Than 15K on Maint. Reminder Yet?
I've got over 2,800 miles now after 2 months of ownership but I still show 15,000 miles on my maintenance reminder. Anyone show less? If so, at about what mileage were you when it went below?
What ever you do don't wait for the reminder specially for you FIRST OIL CHANGE, don't wait more than 5,000 miles, the oil viscosity and color is alarming, some people had found metal parts in the filter, think having metal parts in the oil for 15,000 miles..........
everything i've ever seen, regardless of car, suggests changing the oil 1000 miles from purchase to clean out the engine. those shavings are just inherent to the manufacturing process and should definitely be gone after the first oil change.
Oh boy, here we go - this seems to be a never ending debate. Today's engines are not like they used to be, that's my two cents. There are many who will disagree with the two previous posts (such as myself from everything I've read since I bought my first '04), but there will always be those who will agree and swear to the necessity of changing one's oil earlier and more often. (Kind of like the old Chicago style voting!)
No doubt there are tons of threads on this very subject - just do a search on this board under the 2nd Generation forum.

I agree Otra. Old school mentality is hard to let go off, but after owning 4 MINIs and following the factory maintenance schedule, I have yet to have a problem with 10K+ synthetic oil changes. I have put over 100K miles combined, again with no problems of any kind. To me replacing synthetic oil every 5K miles is a waste of time and money but for some folks this brings peace of mind, so be it. For me, I follow the recommended oil service schedule and continue to motor.
I have a good friend of mine who is a 3 time MINI owner and owns a repair shop. I have a great deal of respect for his knowledge and automotive repair experience, but this is an area where we both have decided to agree to disagree.

I was turning such high RPM's at highway speeds with my '05 MC, which had a 5 speed, that I just couldn't wait any longer. I got it done at about 10K if I remember correctly. The maintenance reminder just never seemed to ever go down so I got it again at about 20k. I hope the technology that figures the appropriate interval really works.
CLUBMANS, Were are talking about TURBO and not SUPERCHARGE, and that is where the difference is, what cools the turbo is the motor oil with tend to degrade faster do to heat from the turbo. The Supercharge don't need oil to cool, even with synthetic and running my Cooper hard like i do, me personally i will never wait 10,000 miles for an oil change......
