R56 wheels on R53... fitment

Hi everybody

I am about to buy a set of 16" S-winders with OEM Continental runflat tires from a Clubman-S.
Does anyone knows if those are exact fit for a '06 MCS R53? Mine was built on 2/06...

I appreciate you help!

Aren't the R56 wheels 14mm bolt holes while the R53 pre-July '06 was 12mm?

I'm in a similar situation. Will the reverse work? We have a R53 (01/06 date) with Web Spoke wheels. Will they fit my new '08 R56 that's on order? or will I get bit by the size difference in the bolts?

The R56 wheels will fit on the R53. The R53 wheels will probably not fit on the R56 unless the holes are large enough for the 14mm bolts.

I'm using a 14/12 stud conversion kit on my R56, which makes it easy to use both the older and newer wheels.

The other issue to be concerned about is the active TPMS on the newer cars, which has a transmitter in each wheel. I'm not sure if all the R53 wheel models can handle the transmitter.

So if I source a set of R56 take off wheels that have the TPMS in them, can I just leave them there since the wheels/tires were balanced that way? Wouldn't the tires have to be dismounted and new valve stems put in otherwise? Then they'd have to be rebalanced, and the cost of the take offs goes up.

Yup, there's no issue leaving the TPMS transmitters in. When it's time for your next set of tires, take them out and sell them here or on ebay. They will help pay for your new tires

I am a little confused... So how I know if my wheels have tpms?
About the wheels, I think I prefer to get a set of r53 wheels and don't mess with this anymore.. I am tired of so many issues with this car...
I have been thinking to say goodbye to Mini family...

You can usually tell if the wheels have direct TPMS based on the valve stems. If they have metallic valve stems, it's very likely you have the sensors in the wheels.

Since all 2008+ model year cars in the US are required to have TPMS as standard equipment, you may want to hang on to your 2006 MINI if you don't want to deal with TPMS

I replaced my TPMS wheels with aftermarket. The flat tire light comes on, the car bongs a few times, then the light quits flashing and the bong goes off. Drive as if you were using the tires and wheels that have been on cars for 70 years. If you are running non runflats, you will have no trouble telling if a tire goes flat, the MINI is not an SUV.

there's no way to adapt them? webspokes and the jcw rims didn't change from one generation to the next. seems like there should be a way to make them work?

Bringing back an old thread... but I had a question.

I ordered a set of Volk Racing wheels that were custom made.
Unfortunately, Volk had them made to R53 specs and were unaware that R56 specs were different.
They wouldn't take back the wheels because of it being a custom order.

So... I did order a 14/12 stud conversion kit like terryg and am waiting on that.

However, the shop that mounted the tires had also said that the hub doesn't fit... so I'll also need a hubcentric ring to go with it.
Any of you had this problem?

As for the TPMS... I had bought brand new TPMS sensors from the dealer and got it mounted to each wheel.
I'll tell you if it works once I finally find a way to mount the wheel to the car.

You don't need the hubcentric rings if you have the studs. The studs center the wheels for you.

Good luck with the kit, and show us some pics of the wheels!

Hmmm... let me try the stud kit by itself first then. Thanks.

Anyway, here are some unmounted pics.

Paipuky, I have the same exact wheels tires on my 2005 R53 S. I bought them from another Clubman S owners in Sunshineminis a few months ago.

Luis Sanchez from Precision Autowerks mounted them in my R53 with absolytely no problems. I am very happy with the look (I used to have the V-spokes which were nice wheels but the S-Winders are easier to clean) and the Continental second gen runflats rated at thread wear 400 are fantastic and very, very, very sticky tires in wet pavement considering they are runflats.

Do it, you won't regret it. If you want to see them in my car, send me a PM and we can meet somewhere in Miami so you can see them and ride in the car to see the difference.

It's taking too long for my stud conversion kit to come in.
Do you know exactly what the sizes are?

Thinking of trying this place out.

(EDIT) Actually... this might be the safer bet.

Would not be easier just to buy a set of OEM lug nuts? (either 14mm or 12mm)... The wheels by themselves fit any of the Minis (they are all 4x100), you just need to get the right lug nuts for your car.

Er...no. There are two sizes of wheel bolts, and two sizes of bolt HOLES in the wheels . If you have a wheel with 12mm HOLES, you're not going to be able to fit 14mm bolts through it. SO...if you're trying to fit a 14mm hole wheel on a 12mm car, you're fine. If you're trying to fit a 12mm hole wheel on a 14mm car, you'll either have to machine out the holes to 14mm, or to get the 14-to-12mm stud conversion kit.

You don't need the hubcentric rings if you have the studs. The studs center the wheels for you.
It's always desirable to mount the wheel hubcentric if possible. The Volks are probably 73mm inner bore, so you'll want a 73-to-56.1 hub bore adapter for them.

Thanks for your advice! I was between an OEM set of 17" or 16"... But after reading many threads, I think I'll go with the 16"... I am buying a new set of S-winders with Goodyear Excellence tires today...
I'll post some pics next week once installed on my Mini. Could you post some here?
Thanks!
