I did my search on this topic and I didn't necessarily get what I was looking for. What is the consensus on the K&N typhoon intake? Does everyone like its response, sound, or power increase as much as the DDM? How does an upgraded panel filter stack up against the typhoon? I am really interested in buying the K&N, but need everyone's help in how I could justify this system over my ITG drop-in and OEM air box.

I am hoping that some K&N owners will chime in here and say what they honestly think of the typhoon intake.

From the looks of things, it almost seems like it is not worth buying an intake like the K&N typhoon due to lack of heatshield and its placement of the filter. I'll have to give it some more thought for sure.

Good choice.
Get as much info as you can can.

Performance wise you could put them in this order (the first one giving the highest gain) :

1)Closed carbon intake (BMC CDA, K&N Apollo, Pipercross Viper, Raid)
2)Open intake with heatshield (aFe, DDMWorks, ABD Monster Force Intake )
3)Panel filter (K&N, BMC)

Cost wise, this is how to order them (the first one being the cheapest) :

1)Panel filter
2)Open intake with heatshield
3)Closed carbon intake

Another thing to consider if you live in California is if the CAI you are considering is CARB-approved. That is why I bought the K&N Typhoon CAI Kit in 2004 -- it's legal here. I like it. Actually, it's time to clean and recharge the filter. Thanks for the thread -- it reminded me.

I should hope the intake goes into vacuum during hard acceleration! Also during idle, cruise, and just about every other running condition. Hard to imagine how the engine would run without air being pulled in there.

yeah moss is a weird company. i mean they're ok. i mostly like them because if i order one day i have it the next since they're close. most of their things i have ordered are nice. but, i know alot of their things ordered by other folks are not so great- i've been lucky with them i guess.

but, some of their stuff boggles my mind especially if they sell something without a good description or picture of it. is it nothing more than a replacement box for the stock unit?

 

I have an Injen HAI; it looks good, simple to install and makes a nice sound when accelerating. But if you are after a power gain I doubt this will do it for you. And the other issue I have is that the intake appears to be sucking the heat shield on the bonnet onto it, so yeah there is my two cents worth.

 

Oh you mean the black stuff on the filter? I seem to have that too.

 

Here's my $.02
I installed the K&N typhoon 69 intake about 1 year ago and was happy with it until I got a custom ECU tune. The techs doing the tune pointed out that the intake temp was VERY high 140deg with an outside air temp of 70deg. So as soon as I could I pulled the intake out and put the stock air box back in with a high flow panel filter. My personal opinion is the only good thing about this intake is the sound it makes. BTW I will be going with the CDA filter with a twist.

 

Another $.02 - I have the K&N Typhoon on a 02 MC. I did an exhaust system a couple months prior and noticed a big difference with the exhaust. When the K&N went on I didn't notice much change. I can only tell the difference in sound with the window down. As far as intake temp, that was a concern of mine, but K&N claims and actual HP increase number, not just advertising HP gains. After removing the OE intake box, I think the free flowing air movement could make up for the higher intake temp. Might consider an intake with a heat shield if you are looking for more performance. I was able to get the Typhoon for free so I am not complaining since it looks better anyway.
