GPS Mounting

Has anyone found a good place to set a portable GPS? Or maybe a good way to mount a portable GPS that doesn't involve a window suction cup?

Kuda also makes some mounts.

Wow! It's like an F-16 cockpit.

I've got an old-style Magellan Roadmate 700. I've set it in front of the tach on a foam pad, but that obviously isn't good.

What you're indicating is that I need to break down and buy a new unit that I can mount in a similar way.

Hardly... you must be thinking of Sid's car...

I've got a Kuda, the one that mounts to the top of the dash between the wheel and speedo (sorry, no pictures on this computer) and like it because it puts the GPS in a very easy to see place (I don't have to look very far down to glance at it while driving in heavy traffic in unfamiliar settings). Only problem is the mount I got has a built in charger, so it kind of blocks visibility of the 30-50 mph range on my center speedo, but I normally use the digital speedometer in the tach (even before the GPS).

If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed it. I flew in the military for over 20 years, and I've flown aircraft not as complex as Sid's car. Tell him I think it's great!

101101, I like the idea of a more heads-up position. Did you have to punch holes to mount it?

Note: my MINI is an '04; based on your sig pic, it looks like your's is a 2nd gen.

The Kuda mount for mine has two flat pieces of metal; the lower one just slides between the soft dash pad and the plastic front; the upper tab goes under the vent in the dash. The only hole I had to make was a small one (~2 mm) to run the wire for my powered base; if you don't get the powered base, don't mind a wire hanging down, or find some creative way to route that wire no holes required.

I just looked up the install directions for a 2nd gen on the Kuda site and it doesn't appear to require any holes, you just need to be a little brave as you have to pop off a cover (you may have no issue doing this; I wouldn't. Then again, I've pulled out the entire interior of my car to install an amp and run wires cleanly) - doesn't look too difficult; probably could be done in <30 min if you take your time.

I actually use the window suction-cup thing for mine, but I mount mine in the very lower left-hand corner of the windshield. Within easy reach, but still out of the way, and I was able to run the cord down in the seal from the A-pillar to the parcel shelf, underneath and over to the power adapter (I have a Garmin Nuvi 680 which has the MSN features, and the receiver for the MSN is built into the plug-in end of the cord, so I can't hardwire it - or at least so far I haven't figured out how without losing the MSN).

Well... technically mine isn't hardwired, I guess... but I got a pair of extra power outlets from newministuff.com that tie into the audio harness behind the headunit... I run my GPS power cord back behind the parcel shelf and plug it in... so it LOOKS hardwired, but it still has the end on it (I don't have the MSN direct one yet, but should work for that one, too).

I use a cup holder mount or a mount I made using the ashtray for a handheld GPS.

I mount mine on the left side, right above my registration/inspection stickers. In the field of vision, but not blocking much.

Pro-clip has released a mount for the R56 finally, that might be a good solution for you

Ditto - that is what we ordered. Works great for the portable NAV and the Sirius Radio.

I suction cup my Garmin Nuvi right to the upper right of the speedo. It covers the 100 - 125mph range. I don't use that part of the range too much during the week

Keeps it convenient for both the driver and passenger.

Another vote for the Garmin suction cup on the speedo -- I've got a Kuda mount, but it needs to handle multiple units, and I'm still prototyping brackets. But until that's done, the suction cup works great.

You can pick up a Nuvi 660 on Amazon or on eBay for $330 or thereabouts -- not too bad.

I installed the OEM Garmin mount for the Nuvi 360. It sits just to the left of the tach and comes with a harness that provides power.

To those using bean bags: do you have issues with the GPS flying when you accelerate / brake / turn? That'd be my only concern with using such a method.

Well, if I don't know where I am, why am I flying around corners?

But seriously, I don't drive that fast and it hasn't flown off.
Leaning it up against the pillar helps.
