Is the Smart shorter than the classic Mini?? Daaaaaaammmmmm Those things are awesome. I'm starting to see a few of them in my 'hood and they're fitting into spaces I wouldn't even attempt...

Well the classic Mini built by Rover clocked in at 120.1" and the 2008 Smart Fortwo is listed at 106.1". Hard to believe it's over a foot smaller than the original Mini!

Not yet, but from the sound of things it is likely at some point

I love this, there is a guy in SoCal who surfs and was carrying the board in the Smart, passenger seat down, with a bit sticking out the back window, which was funny enough, but recently he added a rack.

Hey congrats!, have fun with it We are at around 500 miles, still in break in zone, and the car has improved a lot in several ways - people report it gets better with more miles, so just fyi on what you can look forward to

By the way, check out the Smart forums, there are hub adapters for changing the bolt pattern if you wish. I don't know anything about it but you might find you have more options then you think.

Korby - yeah he probably could get airborne

The pic of the Classic Mini and the Smart sharing a single street side space got me wondering, have you, or have you heard of any cities having a problem with this? I could see an issue coming up if the meter ran out, what car would get the ticket??

Well that's not a metered space (and the nice part of having a micro car is finding those bits of curb in the non metered zones). According to code as far as I am aware though, if two vehicles share a metered space it is okay as long as the meter usage is legal and they fit fine, whether its a motorcycle and a car, two tiny cars or whatnot. If the meter runs out and one or both are left there, however, those guys will definitely be paying a ticket

Yeah I'm sure the ticketing part will be addressed first! That's cool that it can even be done with those cars and I could not see why any city would have a problem with vehicles that maximize space but you know how weird governments can be. I visit the bay area 3-4 times a year and I can say that is the perfect city for a smart and it's micro and few parking spaces.

The first time I had a biz trip to SF I went to get my regular size rental car-well they were out so they gave a full size Buick for the same money-some upgrade! I had a heck of time parking that beast and driving the hills was fun- when I crested the hill all I could see for 1-2 seconds was hood, hope nothing is under there!

Now that would scare me

It's tough to resist filling up the garage slot, Smart + bike and there's still room. Hmmmmm, Isetta?

The classic mini & smart parked together makes for a very interesting study. Yes, the Smart is shorter, but actually looks a bit imposing and larger than the classic mini. The classic mini weighs in at about 1450 lbs., and I think the Smart is 2200 lbs., right? It would be fun to have one of each.

I think the Smart is 1800 lbs. The height on it is funny, first time I've been able to see eye to eye with SUV/van drivers! Yeah, it would be fun to have both, that way I could have a two seater and a 4 seater

The Smart's height is why I said it looks imposing next to the classic mini. Even though its shorter, the larger wheels, larger doors and height (in that photo, anyway) gives it a larger stance...

I'm trying to figure out how to get this one into the US & be street-legal: http://www.smartuki.com. Check out the duel between the Mini Cooper JCW & the Smart Diablo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx6thtXf8-s. You've gotta admit - as cool as Mini's are, the Smartuki/Diablo takes "coolness" to a whole 'nother level.

Saving the best for last:

2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vExpEl0_5-Y

Alright, here we go <drumroll, drumroll> "Mercedes/Smart Brabus Ultimate 112" : http://www.smartcarofamerica.com/gal...images.php?c=6. Drop the Suzuki GSR1000 motor in this & you'd have a 180mph Smart-rocket.

Monoblock wheels & wide-body kit:

Sweet interior:

Backside with mild diffuser & puddle lights:

Coup de grace:

Cool, but crazy. I'd love to test drive a 'busa-powered Smart. I'll pass on the brain-damaging "music" in the first of the two youtube links above.

BMW may be coming out with their own version of the SMART car.

Yeah, seems like a bunch of companies are entertaining similar vehicles for the US - in the meantime I am really loving our Smart
