2002 Radiator Problems

I have a 2002 Cooper. It started having problems with over heating. I was able to figure out that the radiator cooling fan was not turning on, so i replaced it with an after market fan. It still does not work. I have checked all of the relays and they are fine. The fan will turn on fine if I jump it straight from the battery but it does not turn on if I plug it in. If anyone has any ideas of what might be the problem I would greatly appreciate them. Thanks in advanced.

James

If you have an 02 and it has not gotten the fuse relocation wiring kit for the power steering fan, the fuse may still be blown and your power steering fan still inop. Which would cause your fan to still not work. Check the fuses in the engine compartment. There is a 5amp fuse that runs the power steering fan. You may replace that fuse just to see if the fan turns on but wouldn't recommend leaving it that way. You SHOULD really make sure you get that fuse relocation kit for the early models.

I just checked the fuse and it was blown, so I am going to replace it and hopefully that will fix it. Now what is this fuse relocation kit. I searched for it in google and can not find it. Any help? Thanks

The original cars came with the power steering fan and radiator fan on the same circuit. Unfortunately, if the PS fan goes, you overheat. So they retrofitted it to seperate the two circuits at no cost. Check with your local dealer to see if they'll do this for you.

Note that if the fuse is blown, you've likely got a problem with the PS fan. Either there is debris in it, or it died an unceremonious death.

Ok, I can tell that the old radiator fan was the reason that the fuse had blown. And because of this I can figure that my Mini has not been retrofitted with the two seperate circuits. My only problem is that the nearest dealer is in Detroit (Motorcity Mini) which is about 400 miles away from me. But I will check into this. Thanks alot for the help.

in that case order the retrofit kit for a fee if they don't want to honor it with the vin number.
good luck.
