R50/53 Got me a Cooper S last night!
Got me a Cooper S last night!
And boy, am I as excited as a kid at Christmas! Cannot believe it took me 6 years after the release of the Mini to give it a try. Didn't even try to resist it. But found a 2002 Cooper S with Sport package and Sunroof. Only 40000 miles. Gave them only 14800 for it at the dealership. Not bad I hope.
Anyways, just a couple of questions.
1st: Is there somewhere on here to type in a VIN and get a build sheet?
2nd: Now do I find out what was optional and what was standard back in 2002 (such as auto climate control, XENON lights, wheels, etc..)
3rd: Is there any known problems with 2002s that I should be watching out for. Only have 90 days worth of warranty, so hope it isn't a bad year for the MINI.
Glad to be part of this community. Prior to this, I was a Jeeping offroad enthusiast for many years. Now I'm giving the racing MINI a shot for a hobby. So far, I cannot stop smiling. So cool!

Congratulations and welcome to NAM.
No place here to get the build sheet -- but the dealer can do that.
The listing of options from your dealer will then tell you a lot about what was optional on your car. I can tell you the auto climate and Xenon would not have been standard. They are stand-alone options or part of the premium and/or sport packages.
One problem to look for in all MINIs is strut tower mushrooming. If you do a search on NAM, you can read quite a bit about it.

Congrats!
Most of the "bugs" should have been delt with, with that many miles.
rear suspension bolt (recall, at least on the 03's)
coolant tank leaking
boot latch not working (wont close/ open)
emissions recalls (at least on 03's)
Congrats again, and have fun.
What are you doing here? You should be out driving!

Both are built like a brick shithouse. I love all things Getrag.

That's reassuring. Glad to hear they are built tough.

Cheers and welcome,

welcome onboard! $14.8k is not a bad deal
as far as buildsheet, you don't really need it. all the options you can see. ie sports package has s-lites, dsc, foglight, hid, premium has auto ac and sunroof, etc. if you look hard enough on the internet or even here, you might be able to find pdf versions of brochures. edmunds also has options listed tho sometimes they're not entirely correct
enjoy your car. r53's are tremendously fun and lovable

Uh, read the attached thread about faulty and badly designed Power Steering pumps in older Coopers (see Donna and Mikes sig above about their 2002 Mini burning and going to heaven):

You may have been better off by paying few thou more to get an 04 or later model, which have redesigned pumps and reconfigured circuitry installed. Anyway, you should know about this major (I think) problem, and what dealers have done to check it.
2002 was the first American prodcution year, so the cars are spotty at best--U can either get a good one or one that belongs in a junk pile. That's why I waited and got a 2005.
Also, depending on where you live, make sure and look for rust buildup in yr door sill area. there's a sticky on that as well in (ist gen) "Stock Problems" I see yr in Denver as am I so I wouldnt fret this, it's so dry here, but I look every now and then.
If U bought it at Schomp they have one of tthe best service departments around so Im sure they took good care of it.
Welcome to NAM, and good luck with yr new S!
