How many miles on the MINI? Is it due to coating or gears that the S/C is almost gone?

Depend upon the level of damage it's either a rebuild or replacement, in your case with a JCW or other aftermarket available S/C a take off S/C may not necessarily be ported the same causing you some power loss.

There is a used one in the marketplace right now. Same as yours just the stock (non-JCW) pulley.

It depends on the cause and extent of damage, if you do a search this has become a very common issue the past few months as so many R53s pass that 100k mile point.

Stigemeier or Endyne.

Understand though that if the needle gears are worn down, there's nothing they can do: it's a locked part from Eaton.

As long as those are in good shape though they can rebuild it: new seals, re-specced, etc.

Or so I've been told/read.

Yes, its tied into the serpentine belt, once that stops your water pup stops engine over heats and dies.

When replacing such an important engine componant like a SC, I would highly recomend a new or rebuilt unit. if you buy a used one then you are looking at the same headache all over again sooner then if buying new.
I never put used engine parts on a vehicle.

Buy used

By buying used you save bucks, lots of them. Second, by buying used and saving the bucks you can have the part modified the way you want: In this case you will get a SC with better bearings, seals and polished and ported. It will be far better then OEM and will last far longer. A last point, by buying used you help keep parts out of landfills, for the green types like me this counts. You want a polished ported head? Where do you think that bare head came from? Sounds like I'm preaching, not, just think about it.

I could understand what you are saying, but, you are talking about buying a used part and rebuilding it.
that is different from what was being proposed. the person was advising purchasing a used part to install as is. (not Smart).
especially on such a critical component.
As far as the head story goes, it depends who you get it from. some companys build and design there own and cast them from scratch.
as far as the landfills go. whatever dosent get sold just gets melted down and recycled anyway. so buying from a salvage yard does nothing for the enviroment.

If your SC locks up and stops, dont worry about the overheating issue, It wont run long enough to do that once the SC locks up. Your call will not get any air into it causing the engine to stall befor you overheat. You will know when it happens

The usual problem is that the supercharger loses its lubricant in the water pump end, but the charger itself does not usually seize. It will continue to spin, but the water pump stops. THAT is why the cars overheat.

I actually have an extra supercharger, as I committed to buying 2 when mine failed. So, I have a spare used one.

IMO it depends on the part.
Used clutch? Folly - because it takes so much effort to get to it.
SC? - Given that the failure mode is virtually always the water pump gears, it's very easy to inspect/refill/seal those gears before install to ensure that they are up to snuff.
It also depends on whether you do the work yourself, and if you can afford downtime on the car. Also the cost delta. A reman SC from minimania is $1385. I got a used one for $150 - I can install as is, or spend another $3-500 to get it rebuilt if that makes me feel better. Still well below the cost of even a reman - I've seen $2200 for new ones.
YMMV

You can send it to http://www.psesuperchargers.com/ to be rebuilt for less than money. They can rebuild a m-45 for $450.

The market for used ones has been climbing as of late. While I could find lots in $400 range 6 months ago now they are going in the area of $600-$800. Retail on a Reman unit from MINI is $1385, we sell them for $1110 (20% discount)

Do they have the water pump gears? That seems to be the gating item in rebuilding an SC.

I don't believe the rebuilders have access to replacement gears. That is why you get stuck buying take-offs or buying new.
