Painting wheel weights

Has anyone done this?

I just got my konig feathers, black, and the wheel weights stand out like a sore thumb. I was considering just covering them in electrical tape but i have a feeling that wont last.

Is it common to paint wheel weights? for some reason one of my wheels has a lot of counterweight added to it.

Yes .... Why did they not put them on the inside lip and also use tape weights? A good shop would have tried repositioning to lessen the weights required. 3 of my Kuhmos with R90 rims balanced very good with the red spots at the valve stems. One tire had to be moved about 45 degrees to work out. New tires often have little red dots that should be aligned with the valve stems when mounting. This is supposed to help lessen the balance weights required. Modern wheel balancing machines have different profiles to choose for weight placement. They should choose inside lip and tape weights. NEVER put weights on the outside lip of the rim unless it is the only way to balance. My R90 rims will not even take weights on the outside lip!!!

Nothing is cheesier than outside weights on a nice rim!!!!

they arent on the outside, but since the weights are a silverish color and the wheels are black, its very noticeable. Maybe i will ask to have the wheel mounted and balanced.

Oh, I see. Just take some flat black spray paint and hit them with it...?

i would think some hobby paint would work. They are just metal. I would clean them with Denatured Alchohol or mineral spirits. Dont think itwould hurt a thing

alcohol might melt the mounting tape. just do a quick wipe down
with a paper towel and some soapy water, use testor's flat black in a
bottle.

Next time you get your wheels/tires balanced tell them to hide the weights behind the spokes. I used to do this on all the wheels/tires I balanced when I worked at Absolute Motoring.

Sometimes requires slightly more weight, but at least you can't see them.

its a significant amount of weight and i dont think its possible to hide behind the spokes... the spokes arent very fat. i'll try to get some pix tomorrow.

If it is a significant amount of weight as you described, I'd ask them to try again rotating the tire position 180 degrees on the rim. Glad to hear they are not on the outside!! Black nail polish works, and it comes with it's own brush.

yah, sounds like they didn't match mount the tires.... but if they didn't
then it also might mean they dont know wth they're doing and could
possibly damage the finish of the wheel when they remount...

i'd keep it as is unless you have vibration or something.

I use black wheel weights on my motorcycle with black wheels. My local bike shop who does the install and balance for me had no problem ordering black ones from their supplier. You could either have the place get black ones for you or buy them yourself and bring them in. Obviously painting them will be the easiest solution now. But next time you can get black ones.

yeah, i dunno only one wheel is like that. i hope its not an issue with the wheel itself. I think the shop can dismount it without any issues, but with my luck, id rather just try painting it and next time, i will ask about black weights. Thanks for the advice everyone!

if you got lots of wheel weights on a wheel, chances are that the wheel is probably a little bent.

Other possibility is a slightly un-uniform tire..but they are pressure molded so that is usualy not the case..but possible.
