brand new R56 stalled

my four months old MCS died on me this morning. I was 25 feet away from my garage and I noticed my car was stalling. I immediately checked my gear, went to neutral and back to 1st again, and it was still stalling. not sure if its referred as 'limp mode', but I was giving it gas and the idle would not go over 1k rpm. I pulled over, turned off the engine, restarted the car and the engine shut off after 2 secs. I have yellow CEL on so I called roadside assistance and they towed it to eastbay mini.

service rep said they wont be able to look at it until Monday..but at least I got a brand new 3 series as a loaner. still miss my mini though.

anyone had this happened before? I am not aware of any major recall on R56. hopefully this is just an one off case.

328 or 330? Is it faster than the MINI?

If it's the 335i, then it will be faster than the MINI, but I doubt it is as fun!

Low idle/missing/stalling with check engine light could be a number of different problems with the same symptoms. I had two entirely different things do that to me 2 weeks apart. Just unlucky -- one was excessive ethanol in the fuel, the other, a bad VANOS solenoid. Yours may be something else yet again.

The power in that little 3 makes you do things you shouldn't. Enjoy it! Hope your baby is OK.

I got my car back this afternoon..very quick fix.

heres the comment:
"Ran short test and found fault code #2880 high pressure system. volume control valve went through steps in test plan, found fuel level was not high enough to test. had to add fuel to vehicle to finish test. fuel system test good level sensors and pressures were good. cleared faults. with fuel car runs."

I was told there was not enough fuel to push the turbo, they added 5 gallons for me. I asked the rep if its normal the system shuts off my car because of low fuel when the computer tells me i have 2 bars, 55 miles left. he said 50 miles is kinda pushing it and advised me to fill when there is only 3 bars left. I left the dealer and drove home puzzled...

Guys, should I be concerned here? I can think of couple possibilities here. Perhaps something wrong with my fuel pump? Perhaps the computer told me I had 2 bars when the tank was really emptied. This is my first time owning a turbocharged car and I heard they need to be warmed up but I was told when I picked up my car that there is no need to warm up the mini.

Please help a confused R56 owner.

I have personally taken it down to 16 miles and one bar.
The car ran fine. I would not be happy if mine stalls like that.

I normally fill up at 3-4 bars. I'm chicken; yet again, as a lone female, I REALLY don't want to run out on the freeway!

Having said that, I was at 2 red bars the other day, and the turbo functioned well. Maybe it is the calibration, as you suggested. Try running it all the way down and see how many miles the computer says you have.

My 6 month old Cooper S did pretty much the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago, minus the check engine light.

Turned the car on; car stalled. Turned the car on again and the car stalled again. Fuel gauge was at 2 bars also. Gauge had just hit 2 bars. Happened in a level parking lot on a cooler day. It was probably around 45 or 55 degrees (F) at the time. The only differences that I recall was that the weather was cooler and earlier in the week I filled up with a different brand of gas than I normally use.

After the car stalled the 2nd time, I turned it on again and revved the engine, shifted into 1st and headed to the nearest gas station (regular brand that I use). Car hasn't stalled since.

I mentioned the stalling to the dealer. They didn't look into the issue, but there wasn't an engine fault light either so really no reason to.

For those curious: Premium gas since receiving the car; around 8000 miles; and like one of the previous posters, I have had the miles until empty showing down to 6 miles and the car didn't stall, but this was also in the summertime in warm weather.

Sounds like there is an issue with some R56s and fuel pressure when the tank is on 1 or 2 gallons left.

The advice from the tech is good advice to fill up at least at 3 bars left (typically what I do). Also, hate to be a doomsday soothsayer, but we live in a different day and time and you never know when you're going to have to escape town and need more than half a tank to get out of town. So keep those tanks above 1/2 full! :-)

No need to warm up the car or the turbo - just drive gently for the first couple of miles of your commute.
