R50/53 Supercharger
You'd need to replace the water pump, air cleaner, battery location, add a tensioner and, if you want it to last, engine internals. Everything BUT the ECU. The most cost effective way to supercharge a Cooper is to sell it and buy an MCS.
For what it will cost for you to make a Franken Cooper you could buy a MCS & have money left over.
Just my .02.

Work with a tuner
that has experience with Minis. If you're going to get your advice from a bunch of people like me on the internet, you'll have a very long and frustrating path....
I don't really mean this to be harsh, but if you don't know how to size a turbo for your application, or read an efficiency map, I'd say you're over your head and will do a lot of learning in the school of hard knocks. And the lessons will hurt bad, and be very expensive.
Start with a few books on turbocharging engines. There are some reviewed in the reviews section, and lots you can find on Amazon and the like. Hope this helps.
The other way to go is to buy a kit from someone who makes one, but I don't know if there are lots available for the Cooper. If you're going to go into the guts of the engine, then you really need to work with someone who's gone into the motor, and knows the strong and weak parts of the car.

Good stuff Doc, do you think Tim at Fireballed is someone to contact? The man knows turbos. Might be up for the challege of doing this to a cooper.
I can understand how must dandennis123 feel about selling his car and geting an MCS. We all form attachments to our cars. And if he has the money, as it seems he does, it can be done. He will bet to keep his car too.

CRIKEY!
I think this project is going to be an expensive one! Don't forget to buy a new bonnet as well!
You might as well just by a used MCS and do JCW or Dinan modifications for what you'll be spending for the Frankencooper. Just my two cents worth.

There's nothing wrong with putting on a turbo
onto any N/A car, but it's a lot harder to do it to cars that aren't built for it in the first place. But like the posts about someone putting a full corvette drivetrain into a Honda Civic Hatchback shows, anything can be done, and even done well for a low price if you have access to low cost parts, and the time and effort to do it. The Fireballed guys have been doing twincharge and turbo only stuff for quite a while, as others have as well (like Jan and his drag car, and LuckyDogGarage with the work on the turbo only setup that went into the madness car). any of them would be good places to start. After all, the block is the same between the S and the Cooper, so that's not the problem.
Give 'em all a call, and see what they say! They have tons more (infinite more?) experience in this area than I do. Also, don't sell your local speed shop short, there may be some really good engine builders around your area, and while they may not be up on the detials of Minis, they may know how to make good power for engines, But there's risk there as well....
